Show Signpost Friday, April 8, 1983 7 SpORTS Weber in running for All Sports Trophy Weber State is in the lead for the Big Sky Conference All Sports Trophy. Each year the trophy is awarded to the school in the Big Sky that has obtained the most points through its athletic programs. Each sports event is given so many points for the place that the school takes in that event. So far this year Weber State has finished five of its eight Big Sky sports, to lead the Big Sky Conference with a total of 47 points. Following closely behind is Montana with a total of 45. Boise State has a combined total of 42 and Idaho State is in fourth place with a score of 38. Weber's tally is composed of getting six points for placing fifth in cross country; six points for placing seventh in football; 15 points for placing first in wrestling; three points for placing sixth in indoor track; and 17 points for placing first in basketball. Weber has previously won the trophy six times and thus leads all other schools in the Big Sky for the number of times the trophy has been won. Weber won the trophy three years in a row and then retired it for the next seven seasons before winning it another three years in a row. The 1979-80 season was the last time that Weber was awarded the trophy. The Wildcats now seek their seventh All Sports Trophy. With three sports remaining, track, golf and tennis, Athletic Director Gary Crompton feels that Weber has a good chance of winning the trophy this year. Crompton says that Weber is really strong in tennis and golf in which he feels the Wildcats are favored to win. He says that if Weber wins these two sporting events, it won't matter how well we do in track because we will automatically win the trophy. Crompton says that Boise is our closest threat. They could possibly win track and they have a fairly good ten nis team, but they are weak in golf. For taking first place in either tennis or golf, a total of 13 points will be awarded toward the All Sports Trophy. The second place finisher will receive eight points. For track, first place will receive 15 points and second place 10 points. "I think the All Sports Trophy indicates an overall balance and strength of an athletic program," said Crompton. "Some schools spend all their funds promoting a token team, whereas we try to print an overall picture of a total program. We try to fund a well-rounded program and don't put all our money into one area." Crompton also said that the All Sports Trophy is very competitive throughout the Big Sky. "I am proud of the fact that we have done so well because it indicates how well we are doing in comparison with all the rest of the schools in the Big Sky." Snedeker won her match in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. After the windy weather that Ogden witnessed this past week, it was time to play tennis yesterday at Weber State. And the women's tennis team is playing host to five other schools who are here competing in the WSC Invitational Tournament. Those teams competing include Idaho, Idaho State, Montana State, Air Force and Grand Canyon College. All matches are being held at the Edman ' Varsity Courts. If the bad weather attempts to come back to Ogden, all. matches will be moved to the Wildcat Racquet Club in North Ogden. Action got underway yesterday, with Montana State beating Idaho 6-3. Idaho State then took on Grand Canyon College and were defeated by the Arizona school 6-3. Weber State then played back to back matches, losing first to Air Force 6-3 and also losing to Grand Canyon College 8-1. "They have played very well," said Coach Cox "but not as well as I had hoped. Now it's important that we get up for the rest of the matches because they are against conference schools. Idaho State was to be the school to look for, but after today they have gone 0-2. Now it seems as if Grand Canyon College is the team to beat." Liz Rocca, a senior from California, and Jill Snedeker, a freshman from Bonneville High, both won their matches against Air Force and then lost against GCC. "I felt that I played smarter tennis against Air Force," Rocca said. "The key is all in your concentration. We have to be mentally tough no one's playing that way." Snedeker said that she was more consistent in her playing against Air Force.
