We had approximately 635 students from 46 high schools on campus last weekend. With this great number and the tight schedule we tried to follow, it was successful only as much as the cooperation received from faculty and staff. Therefore, we, in the Department of Communication, wish to thank all the faculty who dismissed afternoon classes on Friday and classes on Saturday. We are much in debt to custodial staff for their cooperation in getting doors opened Saturday by 8 a.m. for various events to start. Especially, we thank Lee Manus who acted as a point of contact to take care of last minute problems. The opening session on Friday was highlighted by having the following people give some brief remarks: Scott Adamson, ASWSC Academic V.P.; Dean Mikkelsen for the School of Humanities; and President Rodney Brady for the College. Our appreciation is extended to these speakers. Soderberg conducted a three-hour seminar on wise use of nonprescription drugs Wednesday at WSC. Soderberg said aspirin is one of the most abused over-the-counter drugs because "everybody has it around. It is one of the major contributions to severe poisoning among our nation's children." According to Soderberg, aspirin is harmless if taken in normal doses. "But," he said, "an overdose of aspirin can kill just like anything else. Massive use of aspirin is not justified," he added. Soderberg said another common problem in the abuse of medicines the storage of all types of drugs. "Some people will use only one-third of an antibiotic, then save it and use it at a later date to treat themselves. We want people to be sensible, reasonable users of medicines," he said. Another problem according to Soderberg, is knowing exactly what is in the medicines that are being used. "We need to know the difference between what is being said about a certain product and what is actually the case," he warned. "For example," he said, "to command high prices for some products, there are companies that add one or two ingredients and several million dollars worth of advertising to convince the public that their product is better than another." ;-' 'si Si .id rawe. save fins? aft smcwi?
