Show Signpost First one ever; May 4, 1979; Tennis team seeks title in conference tifs here by Guy Yocom Weber State's tennis history has been rich at times, but never in the 13-year history of the Big Sky Tennis Championships has the squad walked away with first place in the conference. However, coach Keith Cox and six varsity matters are attempting to do just that today and tomorrow at the John Edman Courts and the Ogden Racquet and Swim Club, South. Seven Big Sky schools are competing in the tournament, which Kay Barney With a flurry of recent games that would tire Spectacular Bid, Weber State's women's softball team has faced four different teams in doubleheaders since a week from yesterday. In the eight games played, the women won. three and lost five, with the most recent losses coming at the hands of BYU in non-conference games Tuesday. Neither of those two were regarded as being of utmost importance, and coach Chris Thor- Is ' v M f J rrr"tr-NifMritrnir'ifii-rfi'rTirviir.iTiiffiiiiiliiin'J" began yesterday. "The tournament is really a wide-open affair again this year, with three teams all having an excellent shot at the title," said Wildcat coach Keith Cox. "We are very much encouraged after our performance at the Weber State tournament two weeks ago, where we beat Boise State and Idaho, but the Broncos had beaten us previously, and Idaho is extremely strong this year, so anytning can happen. Realistically, though, it should be those three teams shooting for the title." Along with the team title, trophies will also be awarded for the top player in each of the six singles competitions, and to the three championship doubles teams. Weber State has a strong team, with several individuals capable of getting top places in their matches. Freshman Greg Scher-merhorn has won more matches than any player in the Big Sky this year, and will take a 20-4 mark into the event. Kay Barney, another freshman standout from Durango, Colo., sports a 16-8 record and along with Scher-merhorn will make a tough doubles team to beat. Juniors Peter Markes and Kevin Kemin are both tough competitors, and currently have 18-6 Women face Utah St. nock substituted and switched positions liberally. Prior to that,- the women split a conference doubleheader to Utah State, dropping the opener 6-3 and winning the second end 4-3. Penny Wanberg's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the women the win. A squeeze play bunt by Wan-berg scored Kathy Miller in the bottom of the eighth inning against Arizona State to hand the Lady 'Cats a close 2-1 decision in the STEREO RECEIVER FOR SALE. 60 watts, RMS per channel totally e'j'iipped, perfect condition. The championships will mark the return of Jon Perran, an outstanding player who had a 5-4 report card before getting injured earlier this season. Perran, although still a question mark, may bolster the total team strength. The University of Idaho and Boise State will be the teams to beat. Idaho has won 10 of the last 13 titles. Greg Scemerhorn curtain raiser, and the women then won the nightcap 5-2 by scoring three runs in the top of the 12th inning. Last year, the Wildcats were simply awesome in comparison to the other conference schools, winning the overall title by a whopping 76 strokes. Wildcat golfers occupied the top five positions, and the last man on the team finished a happy seventh. , It has been an extremely successful season for the golf team this year, despite some vague sputtering at the outset of the spring tournament schedule. The team will be represented by the same group as last year, with the exception of Mike Stanton, whose stroke average has hovered in the low 70's the past several rounds. Most recently, the team fared well at the Sun Devil Classic in Arizona, getting their best finish ever. Prior to that, their second place showing at the Cougar Classic pleased Coach Mac Madsen greatly. Track meets on tap for men, women Both men's and women's track teams will be in action tomorrow in important track meets within the state. The men will compete in the Logan Invitational, and will be paced by decathlete Jeff Swanger and a host of other top track team members. Although they have gone their separate ways by competing in several different meets of late, the men will be reunited and at full strength for the one-day meet. Gove has by-passed the NCAA compel: .on to compete for the Walker ( .. team. As much as anything, the weakness of ihe other Big Sky school?- will give Weber State their biggest advantage at the tournament. Most other conference schools have several players who regularly shoot in the 80's, and their northern geographic location has prevented them enjoying the extended golf season that Weber State has had. The Weber State "B" team competed at the Boise course last week, and beat two Big Sky schools as well as several others. The Warm Springs municipal layout has rough that is negligible, and is not very long. The chances of a new tournament record look very good. Mike Borich, John Graham, Vance Christiansen, Joe L. Higham, Stanton, and Gove will comprise the WSC team. the "first ever" collegiate track meet in Wildcat Stadium tomorrow. Participating in that event will be BYU, Utah State, Southern Utah State, Utah, and the College of Southern Idaho. The meet will begin at 12:30 p.m. Laura Camp, Jodi DeRouchey, Debi Halford and Michelle Hansen will pace the track squad. Camp placed second in the 10,000-meter run with a-time of 48:37.3 at the Potato Classic, while Hansen and DeRouchey placed fourth and fifth in the javelin, respectively.
