The Brazilian Olympic team is in Utah for two weeks to do some high altitude training and will join Weber State in a meet with several excellent teams, including a comjglete BYU squad that is one of the best in the nation. The meet will get underway at 3 p.m. with the exception of the long jump, which will start at 2:30. Admission is $1 to students and $2 for adults. The world record holder in the outdoor triple jump, Brazil's Joao Oliveira, will compete in the meet. He holds the world mark at 58-8 Mi, an exceptional athletic feat. Weber State will be represented by several performers who are among the Big Sky's best in single performances. Kim Coombs has the fourth best time in the 400 meters with a 47.9 clocking. Craig Fletcher has turned in the second best time in the league with a 1:50.8 performance in the 800 meters. Javier Chavez is fourth in the 5,000 meters with a 14:37 time. Jeff Swanger, who represented Weber in the NCAA championships last year, is second to Nevada-Reno's Lane Maestretti in the best decathlon performance. But it is Doug Friedli that has drawn the most attention in the conference for Weber. Friedli owns the best single performance in the 1,500 meters this year with a time of 3:47.4, which was electronically timed. He is also tops in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 8:43.9. He is followed there by two other Wildcats, Paul Pilkington and Rex Honholdt. Weber's mile relay team is second behind Montana in the best mile relay with a 3: 15.2 time. Tomorrow's meet will also include Utah, Utah State, Southern Utah State and Boise State. Women compete at Utah Weber State's women's track team will experience a busy day today as they travel to Salt Lake to compete in the Utah Championship Track and Field Meet at noon. The women are coming off a sixth place finish at the Idaho State Potato Classic in Pocatello. The meet was won by Montana State with 132 points, followed by Idaho State with 129. Weber amassed 63 points in the meet. Top individual finisher for the team was Jodi DeRouchey, who placed second in the javelin throw with a heave on3'8". The 400 meter relay team finished second as did the mile relay ; team. Jacki Arnold took third in the 1,500 meter run and fourth in the 3,000 meter run. Shellee Coleman placed, fourth in the 100 meter dash, and sixth in the 200 meter dash. rcoaso victory Weber wins again! At Idaho State in Pocatello during the weekend of the 25th and 26th, the WSC men's rodeo team took the championship for the second time in a row. He also took All Round cowboy, stance Robinson, who wonUiisfcrie, got out of a sick bed to go to Pocatello, and turned in a fine performance. The 'Cats biggest challenge ought to come from Nevada-Reno. The Wolfpack remains the only Big Sky team to defeat Weber thus far, making them the favorites over WSC. Idaho and Northern Arizona may become a factor, with Boise State and Montana rounding out the field. Momentum Weber State finished the regular season with a 25-7 record. The 'Cats are carrying some momentum into the BSC championships on the tide of five consecutive wins. They won four straight matches by 8-1 scores against the likes of Utah State, Brigham Young, Boise State and Montana. Weber then thumped Utah State again, this time shutting out the Aggies 9-0. The win over BYU was a first for Weber as it marks the first time WSC has ever defeated the Cougars in men's tennis history. Former Carbon High School tennis great and Weber State fan Ken "the Hulk" Haub, had this to say about the Wildcats' chances. "I think our team is by far the best in the Big Sky. Nevada-Reno got lucky against us, but I think we'll beat those guys in the conference championships." Individually, the Wildcats are all winners. Peter Markes is 21-10, Kempin, 23-8; Nissenbaum, 24-7; Easterly, 20-9; Rod Hunt, 18-7; Kay Barney, 21-10.
