Show Feb. 20, 1976 Signpost Page 9 The great? by Chris Hicks Signpost Staff The Great Waldo Pepper is not; hence there is irony in the title of this film which tells of a barnstorming pilot in the late 1920's, a hot-shot egotist who, though painted as the last of the great "individualists," in reality was only a bi-plane con artist. Script-writer William Goldman, director George Roy Hill, and star Robert Redford previously teamed for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Goldman and Hill seem bent on convincing us that there is nothing wrong with being a heel as long as you are a charmer and a wit. They're half-right. Redford supplies the charm. Like many films of this genre (i.e. The Blue Max of a few years back), the action is terrific in the air but stultifying on the ground. Fortunately there is lots of air time. Redford, who has proven he is a competent actor in films like Jeremiah Johnson and The Candidate, seems to have taken time off from acting in his most recent films (i.e. The Great Gatsby, The Way We Were, and Waldo Pepper) in order to perpetuate the myth that a popular personality can portray an Arrow shirt ad on the screen for two hours and get away with it. But enough digression. After his barnstorming days in Nebraska, Waldo (Redford) Pepper's fantasy comes true: He comes face to face with his German counterpart, Ernst Kessler (Bo Brundin). Ironically (what? Two ironies in one film?) the war is over and they meet on a Hollywood movie set where both are stunt pilots. Naturally these two top-notch fliers display love and admiration for one another on the ground and, just as naturally, they turn their reel battle into a real one in the air. On the way we have crashes, fires, falling deaths, and a sprinkling of profanities and bedroom scenes, all designed to bring the film's rating from a kiddie-G to an adult-PG but not enough explicitness for araun-chy-R. Fortunately the bulk of this bulky film takes place in the skies. You may not be able to empathize too much with Waldo Pepper's people, but if you can ignore the banal, plastic characterizations you will enjoy some of the finest flying footage ever put on film. Besides Redford and Brundin, the film features Margot Kidder, Susan Sarandon, and Bo Svenson. Rated PG, The Great Waldo Pepper will show at 7 and 9:30 p.m. in the UB Theater both tonight and tomorrow.
