Show Page 9 Weber hosts vrack opener ' 'Weber State Profile" Signpost by Lynn Arave Weber State begins its 1976 outdoor track season tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. by hosting a twelve team field for the ninth annual WSC Invitational Track and Field Meet. Trials in the dash and hurdle events begin at 12:30 p.m. with finals commencing at 1 p.m. Teams invited to compete in the meet are: Utah State, Colorado State, Montana State, Ricks, Southern Utah State, Dixie, Snow, Eastern Utah, College of Idaho, Southern Idaho and Northwest Nazarene. The Wildcat tracksters are very youthful and somewhat inexperienced with only a couple of seniors and three juniors on the team. They will be hard pressed to perform well against Colorado State a strong Western Athletic Conference foe and always tough-arch rival Utah State University. Colorado State has a well-balanced track team that took fifth place in last month's WAC Indoor meet finishing only five points behind third place BYU. The Rams have an excellent crew of distance runners that placed eighth in the NCAA Cross Country Meet last fall. Greg Duhaime' is one of the best individuals on the team since he won the WAC Indoor mile race last month with a time of 4:09.9. CSU also has a seven foot high jumper and a crack mile relay team that's clocked a sizzling time of 3:14.9 indoors this year. Utah State has a team that finished ten points ahead of Weber two months ago in an indoor track meet at Pocatello. The Aggies have a swift sprinter in Emmanuel Idemudia and a strong steeplechase runner in former Davis High star Carl Galbraith. USU also hasfresh--man Isaiah Ugboro who has ran a 1:51.5 half-mile indoors. He will battle former Weber State star runner Dan Dean who will be running unattached in the 880 yard dash tomorrow. Dean is a serious contender for the U.S. Olympic team and has a personal best of 1;47.5 for the half mile. The Weber State team, although young boasts 13 returning lettermen, two school record holders and seven individuals who have placed in the Big Sky Conference track meet. Two of the 'Cats stronger events will be the pole vault and intermediate hurdles. Junior Larry Rose, a former Ben Lomond High performer will lead Weber in the pole vault. He is the school record holder in that event with a vault of 16 feet. He'll be backed by Sophomore Mike Vaughn (15') and freshman Tim Lewis. In the 440 yard intermediate hurdles, junior Clyde Barker, a former Weber High star and WSC record holder in that event at 53 seconds flat will be tops. He will be aided by Weber's second and third fastest all-time one lap hurdlers Mark Von Iderstein (54.0) and Randy Nielson (54.5). Sophomore distance ace Doug Friedli will who set the school freshman 880 and mile race records with times of 1:54.2 and 4: 12.5 will be gunning to break his meet record time of 4:16.2 in tomorrow's meet. Also running will be freshman Keith Knowles who has ran in the low 4:30's for the mile. Lynn Strong, former school record holder in the steeplechase will in addition to that event, run the grueling three mile run as will freshman Bill Tervort. Weber will have two formidible high jumpers in Leon Eddy at 6'9'm" and Bill Shaw 6'll'4". Shaw was the Big Sky high jump champ in 1974. Other Weber State entries will be long and triple jump Kevin Coombs (23'62") and Brad Aylor; weight events- Bob Davis and Darrell Trump; 440 Gary Figgins (49.7), Randy Shepherd (49,7), Gary Rothman and Craig Page; 880 Ron Russell; Sprints; Lynn Bennington, Tom Nielson and Kelly McGarry. mm .
