But don't ask yet when the events will take place. One of the main problems is 4 i. V a" MUD BATH: Antics like this are commonplace during the madness of Spring Fever Week. (Photo by John Shupe) Weber grad named ombudsman John A. Medina, a 1969 graduate of Weber State College, has been named Chicano ombudsman by Gov. Calvin Ramp-ton. Medina succeeds Gilbert Ramirez who moves on to be the new executive director of the Utah Migrant Council. As Chicano ombudsman, Medina will provide liason between the governor and the Spanish-speaking communities. He was also named executive secretary to the 11-member Governor's Advisory Council on Spanish-speaking Affairs. With approval of the. Council, Medina will seek to broaden the economic base of the Chicano community, " promote a -democratic law enforcement service to all people and develop better schools service for bilingual children. Medina would like to work on lowering the drop out rate among .Chincano children. Medina said that more than 70 percent of all - Chicano students drop out by the 11th grade. On one of the nights, the Council will rent the games room and provide free bowling and pool to any interested students. Formal Dance For the not so radical, the Spring Formal dance will be held Friday night in the Ballroom. The council is also planning a few events for the more athletic minded people on campus. Included is a hike up to Waterfall and Repelling off the Stadium. For those of you on this campus who are as confused as this reporter was about what repelling is, it .is basically jumping off a sheer object, usually a mountainside, while holding on to a (hopefully) securely tied rope. As you fall back toward the object, you repell yourself back from the wall with your- feet (again, hopefully). It is a fast, convenient and safe way of getting down an otherwise impassable piece of mountain. At least, it is safer than without the rope. Trivia contest Finally, another planned event is the Second Utah Intercollegiate Trivia Contest. Right now, Elaine Spendlove is looking for members for the Weber State ; Team. As soon as a group is decided on and it is learned which night the concert will be on, the Executive Council will begin assigning dates for the activities. It is expected that the Council will have a decision on the concert soon. m 61 uVk?UL! in South Ogden |
