Called the Southern Intercollegiate Invitational, it attracts outstanding teams from across the country. Foreign Tournament Another invitation came from the Pan American Invitational at Monterrey, Mexico. This tournament usually requires several years on a waiting list. This is the Wildcat's second invitation to a foreign tournament in two years. No money Since the invitations have come in the middle of a budget year, it is doubtful that existing funds will allow acceptance to any of these events this year. The Wildcats are scheduled to Wrestlers fall at Wyoming, face 3 matches this week Bill MuTphy extended his record to 22-3 for the season but the Wildcats dropped their wrestling match 38-8 against the University of Wyoming. Bob Thoman, 142 lbs. tied in his match against an opponent who had beaten him three times earlier this season. The only other winner was John Webb at 134 lbs. "They really stuck it to us," said Coach Chick Hislop. "We won the ones that I figured we would, but then they got some pins against us later." The grapplers continue action this week with a match against Southern Utah State College on Thursday. The match will be held immediately following the varsity basketball game. Friday, the wrestlers will take on the University of Montana at Missoula. Saturday, the grapplers travel to Montana State for a meet against Minot State. Golf Coach Mac Madsen said that in making the next budget request, he would add a request "for one of these flying trirjs at about $2,000 over our normal travel budget." (Photo by Steve Matlow) Friedli nears team record for mile in weekend meet Doug Friedli ran the second best mile by a Weber runner to take second place in last Saturday's meet at Idaho State. Friedli finished with a time of 4:12.5, only 1.5 seconds off Dan Dean's record of 4:11. The winning time in the mile was 4:11.4. Friedli came back to run a strong 9:29.6 in the two mile run. Dan Dean took third in the half-mile with a 1:53.8. Bill Shaw took first place in the high jump with a leap of 6-8. Freshman Leon Eddy was second. The meet included Weber, Idaho State and Utah State. Scores were not kept by the teams. This Saturday, the track team hoimie optimistic about getting his full budget request. "I feel that the Director (Dale Gardner) may be sympathetic to the request, but may take the money out of another area of our budget." Madsen is hoping to rotate these major tournaments on a yearly basis, going to Georgia one year and Hawaii the next. will travel to Provo for an indoor-meet at BYU. Freshmen gym team does well at BYU meet Three women from the Wildcat gymnastics team placed second, third and fourth in overall competition at the BYU Invitational over the weekend. The women, all freshmen competing in the beginners class, were Sherry Adams, second; Linda Meyers, third and Liz Sliger, fourth. Besides these finishers, Adele Chapman took first in the vault and balance beam. The gymnastics team will perform in an exhibition on the gym balcony this Saturday at 9 a.m. |
