Artist Guild blamed student apathy for the cancellation. Artists Guild cancels exhibit Doctor Ash to make Russian trip Dr. Sidney R. Ash, of the Geology Department, will travel to the Soviet Union this summer for the 12th annual International Botanical Conference. While in Leningrad, Ash will speak before the conference members about fossil plants of the Triassic Period. After the conference, Ash will spend two weeks touring the Donets Basin in Western Russia. The basin is the big coal-producing area of the country. The purpose of the conference is to exchange information between countries. Botanists from all over the world will attend.Ash is one of 120. botanists who received travel grants from the National Science Foundation. He was selected by the Botanical Society of America. Ellen Ogan, secretary of the Guild, said, "Because of apathy, it was very poor quality-wise. It was not representative of the Art Department." Two art students, Winston Tite and Roy Wolfe issued a statement in opposition to the Guild's action."We feel that the action taken involving this year's Student Art Published twice weekly by the Associated Students of Weber State College during fallwinter and spring quarters. : Entered as second class mail at the Ogden, Utah, Post Office. The action was not sanctioned by the majority of. the participating artists and will serve only to affect us that participated and not those who were apathetic," according to their statement. Ogan replied to the statement saying, "All decisions, before, during and after were made by the Artists' Guild." - Because of a prearrangement, Ogan said the winning pieces will be shown at the Second Level Gallery on Washington Boulevard. Despite the exhibit's cancellation, prizes will be awarded to the winners as planned. The exhibit was to be shown through May -30 in the Art Building Gallery. bloi2teer.
