It was discussed whether or not the Signpost advisor should serve as advisor to Media Board and whether this appointment should be represented with both voice and vote. "I want to show it as neutrality rather than a vindictiveness." Schwartz suggested the word "defend be eliminated and replaced with the words 'explain or justify' what happened in a situation existing or in a controversial issue." Rich suggested that if they brought in an outside source the Board would be able to view the Signpost as the public views it ... that it would be more representative of how the public views it." Jeppson stated that for "too long a time there has been one group to run the paper, doing what they wanted to do and getting by, calling it Journalism stuff ... and not writing to inform the public." Leonard Hawkes, media representative, said that "I personally have a hard time relating to things that the Signpost does. I think it would be a wise idea if we brought in someone like Dean Mikkelson who has a lot of experience in a broader area. West then entertained the motion that Schwartz be made advisor to the Signpost staff. West stated that he (Schwartz) "was constantly in touch with Signpost editors and that he was down in the office two or three times a day giving them comments and criticisms" and in short, "trying" to serve as advisor.Jeppson stated that this was true, that in her previous experience as a member of the I Fri.&Sat. 7:00 & 9:30 p.m. yearbook staff, Jim Foster who then served as advisor to the yearbook as well as the Signpost "stood in our doorway twice, and surveyed the office and left.
