Show Tuesday, November 23, 1971 Dasketbcll begins SIGNPOST Page 7 Mevj erffenso arae3 defense To pcopeD UflDdGaff netntetrs A new offensive pattern and a pressure defense will be featured by the Weber Wildcats when they take the floor against Augustana College on December 2nd. "We are as strong or stronger than last year," stated head coach Gene Visscher. Weber has four starters returning from last year's championship team. This will provide coach Visscher a strong nucleus. The new Wildcat offense will feature a floating-post style. Three forwards will alternate as the postman giving it the floating effect. Visscher expects to have the Wildcats running much more than in previous years. He noted that the team has excellent overall speed which will provide the nucleus for the running game. The defense will be a pressure defense alternating off and on between a full court, three-quarter court and a half court press. Good depth on the forward line is probably Weber's greatest asset. Visscher has six men he feels he can use interchangeably along the front line. 3y Wil Grey The six men are returning lettermen Rich Cooper, Bob Davis, Jon Knoble and Herm Pluim along with junior college transfer Wes VanDyke and redshirt Rick Camac. Good balance is a team feature and barring injuries Weber should have no personel problems. Coach Visscher feels he has three men who are ready in the backcourt at, this time. Brady Small and Greg Soter return from last year and are joined by junior college transfer Riley Wimberly. Visscher noted that Wimberly is exceptionally accurate snooting up to 25 feet. A strong conference race is a nticipated with Weber, Idaho State and Montana State up front. Visscher was reluctant to rule any team out of the race and noted Boise State and Northern Arizona strong as dark-horse contenders. Montana State features five men 6'8" or over which will make them exceptionally strong. Northern Arizona feels they are 100 per cent improved and also have several men returning. Weber faces its toughest schedule ever this year. Utah State, Evansville, West Texas State, Oregon and Oregon State stand out. Utah State will be out to avenge last years defeat meeting the Wildcats twice, home and home. West Texas State was second nationally in rebounding and will be an aggressive opponent. Evansville won the college division championship last year and will again be strong. Oregon boasts a seven footer which will give them good board strength and a potent offense. Early scouting reports indicate that Oregon State will challenge perenial champions U.C.L.A. for the PAC-8 crown. Weber opens against Augustana College from Siox Falls, S.D. on December 2nd. Augustana features a 6'8" center. Last year they defeated Montana, the only common team played by Weber, 82-68 at home. Weber managed a home win 84-65. On this basis the game seems evenly matched. It should be a good one, so be there! 1 971 -72 Dasticthall schedule Dec. 2 AUGUSTANA COLLEGE AT OGDEN Dec. 7 WEST TEXAS STATE AT OGDEN Dec: 9 'MIDWESTERN UNIVERSITY AT OGDEN Dec. 1 1 CALIFORNIA ST.
