Key. He is a past officer of Delta Phi Kappa. Fran's statement; "I believe in a progressive student government with continued emphasis on academic interests and student affairs which has been developed over the past few years. Experience is necessary to bring that progress about in a meaningful way. My main concerns cover three areas: Responsible students rights with continued defense on the rights of students and change where necessary, but without the undue clamor with which it has been conducted at times this year. More concern should be given to what is accomplished for students that how much noise is made. A more efficient student government which means increased effectiveness of our present organization. It also means making progressive . changes in the organization and direction of student government. Increased opportunity for student participation in government. Eliminating the spoils system in student government. Appointments have previously been made from among the associates of the elected officers. Stand . Vote for FRAN President I would propose to advertise the more than 75 appointed positions that are available and open them to application by all students." Kevin Wheelwright is a member of Ombudsman committee, long range planning, has served as president and vice president of the Weber State Chorale and is a Fine Arts committee member. Kevin Wheelwright; "Two years ago student government took on a new look. It became more concerned with the Academic quality at Weber State. I am running in order to maintain that stature. I intend to establish a direction and an attitude of student government leading to the establishment of a campus community at Weber State College." Six candidates have united in what they call the Students Rights Party. They have submitted a combined platform rather than individual statements. Those involved include Garrison M. Carter, financial vice president; Daniel S. Freeman, senator tech education; Steven Williams, school of business; Keith Hardin, senator at-large; Steven M. Calchera, senator ALS; Jance Dalley, senator education; and Lane K. Carter, senator ALS. Student Rights Party Platform A few statements for a more responsible, more representative, more consistant and generally sanity oriented student government. First a question. Students, do you know where and how your money is being distributed by the present and past student governments? A vote for the members of this party can help you, the student, solve these gross inconsistencies. We do not represent the fraternities, sororities or the other social cliques. We wish to represent the majority of the more serious students on this campus. WE'VE BEEN MISLED TOO OFTEN McGovern Meet Wednesday, April 1 2th 1 :00 p.m. in In order to clarify the position of our combined candidacy we wish to offer these statements of policy: We will work for: A more equitable redistribution of funds towards more academic interests. An end to mandatory freshman residency requirements. An increased effort for library funds. A more independent Ombudsman with an increased operating budget. An independent Signpost, representative. Investigation into the possibilities of a student-run bookstore and snack-bar. An increased student role in the function of the student Union Building. Limited priviledge of access to student academic records. An end of blatant discrimination towards students by campus security officers. An increased investigation into the profiteering by the administration at student expense. And, as an overall campaign pledge, we wish to broaden the entire spectrum of students rights. Candidates for financial vice president are Garrison M. Carter, Dennis Fowler and Rex Stevens. Dennis Fowler, "Of all the studentbody offices, the responsibilities of the financial vice president are the most mechanical in that he must journalize all financial transactions interpret and report the financial condition of student government and its affiliated organizations. (He is then, responsible for the use of approximately $100,000 of student funds.) By virtue of his responsibilities, the financial vice president should be a person acquainted with the business world and who has a working knowledge of financial recording and reporting. I feel I am qulaified for the office of financial vice president because of my involvement in the business world as well as here on Weber's campus. Being a business student, majoring in economics and minoring in accounting, I plan to devote my life to the business world. I have had six years of Supporters Room 228 business and financial experience.I have also been involved with several committees and organizations on campus during the past two years which have helped me to establish a rapport with administrators and students alike. As a student, I feel that student government should be responsive to student needs. As financial vice president, I would work to more appropriately allocate necessary funds to the various campus organizations and see that they function within their allocated budgets. I propose working with administrators to economize educational costs for the student by holding book prices down and applying pressure on faculty to restrict too frequent textbook changes. I would promote programs to advertise Weber State through representation by public relation groups on tour to recruit new students and thereby increase student income. I would fight any possible decreases or cuts in monies made available for student use. I would like the opportunity to work for the students of Weber State. I would appreciate their support." Rex Stevens has been senator of business, is a member of the student action committee, Delta Sigma Pe business fraternity, Delta Phi Kappa and the school of business Dean's advisory council. He has also served on the ASWSC supreme court. Steven's position; "I think student government ought to call for an audit of fees paid by students, by an independent public auditor, to determine that fees from students are not being allocated and set aside to build a Special Events Center. If the studentbody by vote, decides that they want to be assessed for such a center, then their fees may be raised accordingly.Student government should investigate the possibility of the ASWSC owning and managing the Union Building food services and if a positive choice is made, ought to take over that function upon expiration of the contract with the present operator. I think the studentbody officers should initiate action to lower the activity fee from $5 per quarter to $1 per quarter and abolish the $6.67 per quarter athletic fee. People would then have the money in their pockets and wouldn't have to go begging to the Senate for the money that they were robbed of. College students should not have to pay for activities they neither want nor attend. Let students be required to pay tuition, because tuition leads to a diploma."
