Show veber state SIGNPOST D fj DT3 jD editorial DS GGDFDIfilGj) G (?? GO DuUDDDQDi?? by Clark Taylor During this past week we had the honor of proving to ourselves that we really do give a damn about this dying orb that we live on. We held rallies to discuss what was wrong with our planet, we went on bicycle rides to protest air pollution, we listened to speakers tell us that Mother Nature was in danger of passing on to that great wilderness in the sky, and we gave prizes to pictures which showed our great concern about the ecology of our world. It really is fortunate that we are so civilized that we can grasp the intricate problem of self-preservation on a wilting globe. People have been discussing what is wrong with our planet for the past 25 years. If the human race would look in the mirror it would see the real culprit who has reeked havoc on this world. Bicycling is great for air pollution providing that you do it year round. For those who really do use two-wheeled, human-powered vehicles for transportation, more power to you, but for all of those of you who do it once or twice a year - just who the hell are you kidding? Mother Nature is dying all right and when she finally does succumb you and I will probably say; "She was a wonderful person and she lived a good life. We'll sure miss her." Then we can climb back into our caves, take off our gas masks, turn on the air purifiers, and do what every civilized man is supposed to; sit on his hindquarters and think. Earth Week is a fine idea but what is it accomplishing? If the planners of this activity had to get rock bands to play before people would involve themselves then we have to ask them what's the use? Like the man who is a Christian on Sunday and a man the other six days, Earth Week has the same connotations. Why not have Earth Year and hold it annually? Friday, April 23, 1971 |
