For the past three years on the Ogden campus, the talk has centered around massive Willie Sojourner, basketball player superb. During his career at Weber State, he as much as anyone, has made the Wildcats equal to the Big Three powers in the state - BYU, Utah, and Utah State. An era in which basketball became "big time" at Weber State has also brought fame to the young head basketball coach, Phil Johnson, who in three years has amassed a fantastic 68-16 record, three Big Sky Conference crowns, and three trips to the NCAA Playoffs. This season was the third 20-win season for Johnson, Sojourner and company. The first year was the best with a 27-3 log and third place in the Western Regionals not to mention a national ranking of 17th in the UPI poll. The second year yielded a fine 20-7 record, and this year the Cats finished at 21-6. In three years, the Wildcats set many team records. This year they added several. The most free throw attempts ever was 52 against Idaho State. A low opponent total of 41 points set a new Wildcat Gym mark, as did the total of 106 points. Both marks came in the 65-41 win over Idaho. Season free throws made and attempted, 531-818, were new records. The record books had many new entries many of which were career marks re-written by "Wonderful Willie." Sojourner finished a three year varsity hitch with two single game records. As a sophomore, he connected on 15 of 17 foul pitches to establish a new mark for the most made. A record 25 rebounds against West Texas State as a junior is also a high water mark. Season records owned by the 6-8 post man include the most points scored -- 566 during 1969. As a junior he flipped in 552 points for the third highest total for a Wildcat, and this year hit 445 points, which is the tenth highest total. The highest game is 21.2 points scored by the three time Big Sky first team star. At the charity stripe, Sojourner holds a pair of marks, one for the most made in a season with 170, and the other for the most attempts with 231. Both free throw marks were set as a sophomore. The most feared big man ever to play in the Big Sky, Sojourner was a demon on the boards. He holds the Big Sky record for the most rebounds and the highest average, 249 and 16.6 respectively. At Weber State, besides the single game high of 25, he has hayled down (a record) 1,143 caroms, with the junior total of 411 being the season best. In a new statistic, the Germantown, Pennsylvania, athlete blocked 123 opponent shots in 25 games during the 1970-71 season. Career records include the highest field goal percentage at .517, the most field goals made and attempted, 561-1086, the most free throws made and attempted, 441-612, and the most points scored, 1563. A career high of 81 games were played in a Wildcat uniform by the Big All-American. In 81 tilts, Sojourner was whistled with 229 personal fouls, but left only eight games via the foul route. The lost hurrah All good things must come to an end. And with the last year of college ball for Willie Sojourner the end of fantastic college basketball career approaches for Willie. We wonder who-will miss it most Willie? or his fans? Well it's all over until next year. Weber State's Wildcats will have to wait another year to throw the ball through the hoop. Weber State ran into the Forty-Niners of Long Beach once again .Beanr a Ibreals. You're the only one who can. Because all Smokey can do is ask you to help prevent forest fires. He can't break your matches. Or douse your campfires. Or snuff out your cigarets. Only you can. So, please, lend Smokey a hand. And maybe while you're at it, lend him your voice too: tell people to give the bear a break. He deserves it. So does America. X s. Advertising created for the public good and the final result was just about the same as one year ago. Weber lost 77 to 66 to the talented hoopsters from the coast. Weber should not feel bad though because the team that beat them took the number 1 ranked Bruins from UCLA to the last second of the game before falling 57 to 55. With Brady Small, Bob Davis, Richard Cooper, and Jon Knoble all coming back next year, the Wildcats should prove to be just as exciting and formidable as they have been in past years. Add to this the good transfers that coach Johnson always seems to come up with and the sum total equals another great season for the Wildcats from Weber State. was it 2.0 CKrJE" $oWt , kVm-ZQN ', rfll 7T77777m WSC BOOKSTORE RETURN POLICY ON BOOKS To receive a 100 refund the following conditions must be observed: 1.
