Head coach Sark Arslanian and his staff had the chore of acquiring recruits for the seven offensive ' and eight defensive performers who did not report back. But coming back are twenty-two lettermen, twenty-five junior college transfers, nine redshirts, five squad members, and three others. Last year's offensive field-marshal, John Smith, moved into the middle linebacker slot leaving the quarterback position up for grabs. Mike Rodgers was an All-American honorable mention at Grays Harbor Junior College. A scrambling transfer from Centerville, Iowa, Junior College is Dale Mager. Bob Bramlett is only a sophomore and in 1969 he ranked third in the nation in passing at Walla Walla City College in Washington. A Ricks, Idaho, Junior College transfer, Eddie Cameron, is also vying for the quarterback slot. Tailback Jim Edwards led WSC in punt returns last year with 18 for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Jim is a returning letterman and second team All-American at Mesa, Colorado, Junior College. His running mate at fullback is a returning starter and third team Associated Press All-American Jack Brown. Brown ground out 735 yards as a sophomore and 818 in 1969. A returning letterman who played behind Sam Gipson last year after transferring from Pasadena Junior College after only one year of football is Buford Wilson. He also finished third in rushing yardage last year. Randy McDougall, the split end, was second in the nation in 1969 in reception yardage with 667 and fifth in receptions with 37 at Walla Walla City College. Returning starter and flanker Mark Laughery led the Wildcats in catches with 20 for 410 yards and four touchdowns. He was an All-American Honorable Mention at Pierce Junior College in Los Angeles. Rich Nielsen the three-year varsity basketball player who has not played football since his all-state days at Paul, Idaho, holds down the tight end spot Weber State's offensive line is; manned by centers Dennis" Westberg and Gordon Baxter, tackles Jim Campasano, Dave Taylor, and Ray Hunt, and guards Polo Afuvai and Tom Morgan. Westberg is a transfer from Long Beach City College. Baxter is a redshirt from Shorline Junior College in Washington who was converted to center from the backfield. Jim Campasano is an All-conference transfer from Sacramento City College, Dave Taylor is an All-State transfer from Wenatchee, Washington, Junior College, while Ray Hunt is a transfer from Orange Coast, California, Junior College. Polo Afuvai is a returning starter who was All-conference at Glendale Junior College. Tom Morgan transfered from Long Beach City College where he was All-Metro. Doing the kicking duties for the Wildcats is Chilean soccer style place kicker Jaime Nunez. He is a returning letterman and kicking specialist. In his first year of football last season Nunez hit 31 of 33 points after touchdown and eight of 28 field goal attempts in which the longest was 48 yards. The punting will be handled by Don Ritchey. Weber's devensive front four consists of two lettermen, one redshirt, and one returning squad member. Defensive end and letterman Henry Reed played fullback in the spring, has halfback speed, and is a top pro prospect. He was first team All-American at Iowa Central Junior College. The other defensive end is redshirt Randy Kindle who played at Grays Harbor Junior College in Aberdeen, Washington. Don Ritchey a transfer from American River Junior College can play this position in addition to performing his regular duties as the Wildcats punter; Defensive tackle Bob Pollard is a returning starter and letterman who redshirted at Weber after playing at Texas Southern. Returning squad member Craig Hess is the other defensive tackle. Middle linebacker John Smith was WSC's 1969 quarterback. He played on the Wildcats last freshman team and then redshirted. Outside linebacker Rick Steere is- areturning -letterman- who-transferred from Shoreline Junior College.
