"The New Tenant," and "The Lesson" are two works in which Ionesco plays back to us, in the raw, our own words, according to John Elzey, director of the plays. He bewilders, delights, annoys, astonishes and amuses his audience, and then leaves them responsible for solutions. "The New Tenant" deals with a man who moves furniture into his new apartment. Slow, ly the articles, the pictures, the vases, the chairs, the clocks accummulate until there is no room left. The dramatist is said to make the furniture speak with eloquence, until it becomes the terrifying symbol of a deranged mind." "The Lesson" is a macabre farce dealing with an antic professor who has murdered thirty. nine students and murders the fourtieth before our eyes.
