The Wildcats will be looking to topple the Cougars in the 1 p.m. double-header as they did a year ago 4-1 and 3-2. The Western Athletic Conference Northern Division champions in 1969 with a 30-15 record lost the WAC title to Arizona State University, who went on to win the NCAA crown. The Cougars are strong contenders for the title again in 1970. The Wildcat pitchers must stop the Cougars potent hitting which is lead by All-American Doug Howard and Richard Fairbanks. Howard, a first baseman, hit .396 last year including 15 doubles, 2 triples, and 7 home runs. Fairbanks was an All-District Seven outfielder with a strong .349 batting average. Weber's starting pitchers will probably be Steve Brophy 2-0 and Brad shields 2-2. coach Blaine Sylvester will have Bob Nicholson, Barry Bagley, and the rest of the bullpen aces ready should they be necessary. GOOD HITTING The Wildcats are getting good performances from the plate by Bill Sowders, who is leading with 27 hits, 19 RBI's, five triples, and a .435 batting average; infielder Mike Hall who is hitting .341 and has five stolen bases; Craig Hansen, who is hitting at a .313 pace while being walked 14 times ; and shortstop Larry Cole, the leading scorer on the team with 20 runs, who also has five doubles, and a .304 average, and five stolen bases. The team was batting at a .278 pace prior to the weekend tilt with Southern Utah State College. On the pitching side of the docket, the Wildcat hurlers have an 0 0 a W -SS 7 Mon., Tues.,Wed. April 20, 21, 0 earned-run-average of 4.96, which is lead by Bagley at 2.20, Shields at 2.60, Greg Downs at 3.75, and Glen Paramore at 3.81. In the first 22 games, the Wildcats emerged with a 13-9 record. Of the 13 wins, however, seven were by shutouts. Nicholson and Paramore have pitched two each, with Nicholson owning a no-hitter against Ricks. Other players expected to see a lot of action for the Cougars are catcher Terry Sanford, second baseman Lee Berge, third baseman Mike Folster, shortstop Mike Staffieri, and outfielder Dane Iorg. For Weber, will be Hall, Cole, Kirk Black, Blake Zimmerman, Hansen, Sowders, Frank Park, Dominic Albano, John Webster, and Rourke McDermott. Success in Las Vegas rodeo Weber State's rodeo team had a successful trip, a week ago at Las Vegas where Rone Rose placed third in the Bareback riding, fourth in the Steer Wrestling and fifth in the Bull Riding. Kent Smith placed third in one go of the Saddle Bronc riding with Glade Prescott placing sixth in Bull Riding, giving Weber's boys team enough points to remain in second place in the Region. The girls also did well at Las Vegas where Lynette Hadley took first place in the Barrel Race, Sandra Stahli took third in Goat Tying, and Karol Knudson placed fourth in the Barrel Race and Goat Tying, giving the girls team enough to remain in first place. The Rodeo Club is now starting preparations for their rodeo to be held here in Ogden May 21,22, 23. 22 SHAKES 2 for 49 c More then eighty varsity candidates for the Weber State football team began spring drills Saturday, April 11. The 1970 Wildcat spring team includes 22 letterman, 29 JC transfers, 9 redshirts, 8 1969 squadmembers, and 12 others from the freshman ranks, former frosh, mission returnees, and service vets. Only three starters are back on defense, and they are defensive end Bob Pollard and defensive backs Bob Wilson and Al Wiley. On offense five starters return including quarterback John Smith, flanker Mark Laughery, fullback Jack Brown, guard Polo Afuvai, and end Newell Roche. Coach Sark Arslanian and his staff of Tom Ramage, Doug Hunt, Bud Belnap, Ralph Hunter, Lynn Corbridge, and Herb Hawkins, have a major rebuilding job to do. Several new quarterbacks are on hand to try and take Smith's starting assignment. Recruiting has brought in some good passers and receivers and Weber could be much more of a passing team next year. Smith will be tough to overtake, however. He has been working on his passing game all winter and has that much needed experience. Lettermen back for the 1970 season in addition to the retur ning starters named above are kicker Jaime Nunez, receiver Steve Schmitz, defensive back Dave Smania, defensive back Ed Eno, defensive back Ben Dew, running backs Buford Wilson and James Edwards, punter John Pezeley, defensive back Ethan Oliver, linebackers Steve Bruno and John Pica, defensive end Henry Reed, and sometimes starter offensive tackle Rich Stromberg. Last year's squadmembers are Tom Bokarae, Spence Hoppin, Toney Smith, Clyde Gilbert, Randy Kindle, Craig Hess, Dan Hutton and Pat McMullin.
