Chow Movies New Wave, Munch-in is In! BY KEITH FREDRICKSON "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" has been acclaimed as one of the best movies of the year. Maybe it is. It has a simple enough plot. Girl (played by Kathleen Houghton) meets boy (played by Sidney Poitier and brings him home to meet her folks and eat dinner. The only trouble Is that Girl is a White A rnerican and Boy is a Black A merican. In other words, "Dinner" is a movie about lnter-raclal romance and marriage, which is a timely topic that needs intelligent discussion. And "Dinner" is the first major movie to discuss it. Fine. But "Dinner" discusses it in such a manner that the whole thing becomes improbable. First of all, the Girl is a very young, very optimistic, very naive 23 year old college graduate and very much an idiot. The Girl is stupid. Then the Boy Is a doctor, an author, a professor, a genius. The Boy is not stupid; he's Albert Sch-wletzer.Then there's the girl's father. (The late Spencer Tracy who steals every scene) He's a liberal newspaper editor who is ultra-tolerant. And also bright enought to see that he can unload his silly daughter as one of the three wise men and get her his tired back. "Dinner" would be a much better movie perhaps, if it were believable. If the Juliet would have been a little brighter and the Romeo a bit tarnished and the father a little less liberal. The Tailored Look Is "In" .
