Show SIGNPOST Page 12 by Eugene Carlson "Be my valentine!" Now wait a minute before you committ yourself. Do you realize that someone asking you to be their valentine may be in reality hoping to make a martyr of you, or maybe trying to paganize you? It's true. Valentine was the name of two 3rd century saints who suffered martyrdom in the year 270 in Rome Feb. 14 being their feast day. St. Val-entineis the name of other martyrs celebrated in the various Roman martyrologies, but the dates on these are obscure. At any rate, it might pay to keep an eye open when someone cni an eye open when someone snickers 'Happy Valentine's day'. On the other hand, you should beware of cleverly disquised heathens, advocating subtle moral decay. They may have been informed that the association of the lover's festival with the saint was purely conncidental. In fact, in ancient Roman history, the pagans had a lover's feast, the "Supercalia," on Feb. 15, and it was later incorporated into the day honoring the saint. However, by realizing the numerous pitfalls involved in this complex day, we can dodge disaster and go on to have a cautiously blissful and amorous Valentine's Day. Be myValentine? by Denny Osborn Reorganization, review of past achievements, and plans for the future events highlights the Feb. 4 meeting of the Circle K Club. Officers for the remaining 1965 school year will be President David Wayne Vaughn, Vice President Joseph Jenkins, Secretary Dixon Reisbeck, with Dennis Adams as Sargent-of-Arms, and Denny Osborn as Public Relation Secretary. In reviewing the activitieis of the club thus far this school year it was noted that Circle K's coordinating efforst on the fall quarter Red Cross Blood Drive netted 140 pints of blood from Weber State students. Excelsior was the winner of the best participation award in the drive. Several members of the Circle K Clue also ushered in the recent Songfest. Plans for the future include a Goodies Sale on Feb. 12, at the high school debate meet at Weber State. Several projects are being contemplated for the remainder of the year. Circle K is a service club and its purpose is "to give primacy to human and spiritual rather than to material values towards our lives; and to provide the adoption and application of higher social, business, and professional standards, and to provide through Circle K a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities." All male college students are invited to join Circle K. Those interested should contact David Wayne Vaughn (392-0543,) and this should be done as soon as possible.
