Show W7la)I? EdIgS pQD'ODoiAldl Weber State's lethargic basketball squad, down by one point at the half, came storming back In the second stanza with a well-oiled attack to shade Portland State, 79-71, in a non-conference game Saturday night before a disappointing home crowd of 2,500. The loss was the 11th straight for the Oregon crew without a win, but this was a proud team. They played the Wildcats down to the wire before tripping. In a contest which was tabbed a possible mismatch beforehand, John Nelson of the Vikings hit from everywhere on the floor for 32 points to throw a scare into the overconfident Cats. Leading the Weber State assault late in the game were Greg Har-rop, who was high man for WSC with 19 tallies, and Jerry Trice, who came out of his recent slump with a classy floor game and 15 points. Trice hit serveral crucial buckets to keep Weber ahead. The triumph was the 25th straight for the Purple and White on its home maple. But that string of wins nearly came tumbling down under the hot hands of Nelson and crew. Nelson, who has been averaging 22.4 points per game, made believers out of the sparse Wildcat crowd with an amazing display of accuracy during the first half. Nelson couldn't miss--until late in the game, that is. And when Nelson began to cool, the Wildcats, fired up by the play of 6-7 sophomore forward Ted Bryant, turned on the burners. Gene Vlsscher, who is becoming known as Weber's Ail-American fouler, went out of the contest this time with 11 minutes remaining. Bryant, a jumping jack who works well off the boards, filled it well for Big Gene and played his best game of the season for the defending Big Sky champions. Visscher and Bryant both tallied 8 points. Bob Belka, the string-bean Wildcat forward, was instrumental in the closer-than-expected victory. He pumped through 17 points, second only to Harrop. Most of the 2500 fans left the fieldhouse, however, wondering just what conference champions should play like.
