He said the remainder of games on the IM schedule would be played under "touch" football rules used in the past. The decision to ban flag football was made by Rhead following a rough game between Sigma and the Diesels' last Monday on the lower quad. The Friday before that Excelsior and Phoenix engaged in an even rougher contest in which both sides waved threatening fists at various times during the game. The idea of flag football was to have the players carry a flag under their belt which the opposing players would grab in place of a tackle or the "touch." In the Phoenix-Excelsior game, however, both sides carried only one flag each, and that in the back pocket. When confronted with a charging opponent, the linemen discovered it was easier to tackle him rather than reach around and yank the flag, which was usually nailed down tight by an ill-fitting pair of levis. ' For the Sigma-Diesel game, Rhead made each player carry two flags and those to be looped around their belt. But that failed to stop the opportunists who tightened their belts a notch or looped the flag so that each end was equal in length, making the flag almost impossible to remove at times. Newell Anderson of the Diesels and Lynn Perkins of Sigma proved how hard yanking the flag was in Monday's game. Usually a straight man, Perkins got the laughs Monday when he nailed Anderson's flag and got something he didn't bargain for, Anderson's pants.
