Beside seeing the games go off as scheduled, Ab is personally umpiring each game. Not only is Ab activ in touch-football, but he also is a capable basketball official and does a lot of running in track. Clark college boast one of the best defensive J. C. teams in the West. In four games they have had only 28 points scored against them. With a southpaw passer named Wimpy Fletcher who has completed 20 of 39 passes this year,' Clark's Penquins will probable be, favored over the Wildcats. The Washington Eleven is undefeated thus far this year. Though Notre Dame has been defeated twice this year, .. no one will ever forget the great teams it produced in the past or the colorful stories that have come from them. Stories such this one. At the end of one of Notre Dames best seasons, the captain suddenly burst into tears as he was turning in his suit. The coach asked with amusement, "What on earth have you got to cry about? You're the captain of the best team we've had in years. You're handsome, rich, and have just been voted the most popular man in the senior class. What's wrong, man? "Oh, coach," the player sobbed if I could only read and write!" " Sigma has the inside lane in the intra-mural touch football. In beating the sisters Tuesday, Sig (art appropriate . abbreviation ) now has championship of league 2, League one is still wide open, with Phenix, alpha Roe, Viking and Excellsoir leading the way. Boyd Applegarth has proved one of the best passers ii, the league. Boyd's inspired passes at Chyrll Olsen during Excellsoir's first game can't be beat. (Though I will be when he reads this.) Speaking of basketball, Coach Swenson reports the first basketball practice of the year will be next Monday. Weber has five let-terman men returning this year. These are Larry (Spider) Woods, Don Dinsdale, Base Beech, Dale Gardner and Glen Ashby. Rumors are being spread that Darrel Tucker may return this year. If he does, Swenson should have one of the best teams hejs ever produced. Coach Swenson reports a good crop of freshmen coming from the high schools. Merrill Tribe made a sensible remark while on the way to a poker game last week. It went something like this, "I hope I break even tonight, I need the money." Basketball Tests Starting Monday Basketball is just around the corner and Coach Reed Knute Swenson has named Oct. 30 for the first practice date. A large group of cage artists are expected to turn out for the opening practice with gaining a starting berth in mind. Swenson always has a, good team on the floor and with the high spirit of the enthusiasts this year, Weber will once again be on top of the basketball race. The members of the 1950 aggregation will have the opportunity to travel to Oregon and Washington on one of the road trips o test junior colleges in that ara This series is scheduled for between Dec. .11 and Dec. 21. The colorful Crompton junior college casba crew will journey to Ogden to furnish the comnetitio;' for the usually powerful Wildca's. The Crompton aggregation boaits one of the best athetlic junior colleges in the nation and they are always a threat to their compeiit;o.i. Weber was hard hit by graduation this year with Lawrence Stone Don Madsen, Dee Wallace, Lio-':1. Draayer, Sterling Gardner, Keith Sewell and Dee Wallace al! on the graduation program. Some outstanding Iettermen will be back in the Purple and White for the Swenson coached crew this season. Don Dinsdale, Glen Mc-Eintire, Larry Wood, Dale Gardner. Sherm Wayment, Basil Beech, Glen Ashby and Martin Steele will all turn out Monday. Some fine high school star of last year will also be present at the initial test. Two All-Staters. Bob Harbertson and Bill Hull, are expected to do great guns for the "Cats". They both performed for Ogden High last year. ' ' The coaching staff at Weber is looking forward to one of the biggest seasons in the history of the school this year. Boys Are After Dear and Deer Utah's deer, season opens Saturday with a bang. Many Weber college students will join the thousands of hunters throughout the state. A good season is expected, but many areas will not be at their best because the snow is late ,in driving the deer off the high ridges. Utah, as a rules, is one of the best states for hunters getting their deer. About half the Utah hunters kill a buck each year, making first place or nearly first in the national average. "I 4 Head Coach Marshall "Dutch" I Shields of Clark College, Vancou- nigniy touted Ulark .Penquins to ver, Washington, has brought his ber college Wildcats tonight at Ogden to perform against the We-the Ogden stadium. Shields has a hustling ball club this season and they are out looking for victory number five against the "Cats". So far this year they have turned back four squads while only tasting defeat once. They have amassed a total of 79 points against 47 for their opposition. After a rather cool year last season the Penquins roared back with 11 returning Iettermen to be one of the biggest threats in the junior college circuit. Two of their most cu's'.andine; returners are Wimpy Fletcher and Jim Dean, both regulars last year. Fletcher will offer the Wildcat", plenty of trouble if he lives up to the press notices. Thus far this year he has thrown a .463 pass competition record. He also runs very well and calls signals for the visiting club. Dean, who was voted the most valuable player for Clark last year, is also expected to give the We-berites a tough run for their money He was Clark's leading grouna gainer last year. The Mecham coached crew will be watching these two men very close tonight in an attempt to bring the Weber string to five wins and two defeats. The Wildcats returned home from a road trip to California Saturday where they split twin grid encounters. They were nosed out by Compton 68-0 (very close game) and trouched John Muir 13-6, (very one sided).
