With spring sports well under way, the time is right for this optimistic writer to prophecy the measure ot suc cess the track and baseball teams will obtain. As far as the ball team is con cerned, Coach Mecham is counting his blessings and they are many for he has an abundance of capable infielders, fine pitching prospects and a fleet set of outfielders. According to Coach Mecham, it will be extremely difficult to select a starting squad from the large number of exceptional players. (See story on this page.) Cinder Outlook The cinder crew outlook, although not as glowing as the baseball outlook, is nevertheless bright. Coach Anderson's squad is possibly weak in the sprints and high jump but is power laden in the distance and weight events. Kent Jones, the former Weber High School 'flash and Utah High School 880-yard champ, leads the impressive list of distance men which is destined to pull many points for the Weber squad through the season. Veteran Eldon Marshal and newcomers Larry Neves and Reed Flint are being heavily counted upon for points in the weight events. All told, it should be a lively season for Weber's spring sport teams. Competitive Golf? This spring Weber College could have, perhaps, the best golf team in the state, including all major colleges. If this could be said about the football, basketball, baseball, or track teams, morale around the campus would naturally be at a fevered pitch. But as it is, this talent will probably go unused due to the fact that there is no intracollegiate golf competition in the conference which includes Weber. Weber's golf enthusiasts contend that funds should be appropriated so that a team could compete with major Utah colleges and practice with a few better high school teams.. The golfers feel that if there is a tennis team there should also be a golf team because enrollment of the golf class is double that of the tennis class. Whether there are at the present time sufficient reasons to justify the forming of a golf team and where the needed funds are to come from are the points in question. The golfers feel that there are reasons and money can be raised and also feel (they are probably right) that because of the tremendous increase in the number of golfers throughout the nation the establishment of golf teams in all major schools is practically inevitable and it may as well start this spring at Weber College. Intramural Play In Spring Lull Intramural competition is at a momentary lull, with table tennis and paddle ball holding all of what little interest is being shown in the extensive sports program. ' Spring quarters is annually the slow spot in competition but it is expected any day that interest will pick up due to the bracketing of several crucial matches in table tennis. Powerful Kay Thompson is again the stalwart of the campus "pongers" and has advanced to semifinal standing. Clark Draayer of Excelsior is also tabbed as one of the men to win. However, both Thomson and Draayer are bracketed in the same class and only one can emerge from that class to meet the winner of another bracket. The rough and wet sport of water polo is next on tap for intramural participants and already many strong teams have been entered and are ready for the fierce competition. This sport of water polo offers much enjoyment to both participants and spectators and is sure to be a shot in the arm of the ailing program. Wife: (to returning husband) So you finally came back. I guess home is the best place after all. Husband: It's the only place open. Husband: Let's have some fun this evening. Wife: Okay, and please leave the light on in the hallway if you "get home before I do. Both are strong contenders for starting posts.. Excels Far Ahead In Intramurals The spring season is the home stretch of the intramural program and to date the Excelsior men's club is leading the pack of "also rans" by several lengths and seems destined to cross the final wire far ahead in total points. The Excels have amassed a total of 835 points to hold a command ing lead over second place Sigma which has 330 points to its credit Phoenix and Alpha Rho are dead locked for third and fourth place with 250 points each. BULLETIN Community Theater's next production, "My Man Godfrey," will be under the direction of Julian R. Stephens. The play will be a light comedy. One of these holding the interest of many students at Weber College is golf, and a heavily enrolled golf instruction class has been formed. The golf class, which meets twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays at eleven o'clock, is under the direction of our sports-minded coach, Milt Mecham. The class consists of 30 students. The mem bers of the class will start playing the El Monte golf course as soon as the weather permits. In the meantime, they will be instructed on the old campus. The class is made up of many beginners, intermediates and five or six of the state's top amateurs. These top golfers are attempting to form a team to represent the class and college in competition. Spirit, Ability Plentiful-Mecham Weber College baseball followers have reason to gloat about the perennial superiority of Weber baseball teams if this year's squad is to be any standard of the type of ball played at this campus. According to genial baseball coach Milt Mecham, "I'm- very pleased with the prospects," but coming from the conservative coach it would be more nearly correct to say the squad is loaded with talent. Coach Mecham couldn't keep from beaming with delight as he reviewed the name and talents of each member of his impressive list of main string prospects. This list is sprinkled with reliable veterans and loaded with impressive newcomers. From the prospects there is mound experience, an air-tight infield, fleet-footed outfielders, and power at the plate. Utaka Harada. Junior Hartley and Bill Bell are flawless fielders, while Vern and Reed Neilson, George Stetler and Larry Jensen can blast the pellet to all corners of the park. Jim Johnson, Bud Call, Reed Neilson, and Baty Morrison make up a very-exceptional pitching staff. The right combination of these players could possibly carry Weber colors into national recognition. Coach Mecham has kept a watchful eye on his prospects and reports it will be extremely difficult to select a starting nine from the many fine players. The men have been working out for close to three weeks and will start testing competition in the form of practice games next week. COMING EVENTS Alpha -Sharmea Da nee... Tonight L. D.
