Show SIGNPOST October 26. 1951 Wildcats Win Five Straight, Then Lose to Broncos by One Point Page 4 Weber Crushes Carroll, 20 to 0 Wildcat grid team ripped into Carroll college, 20 to 0, Friday night, October 12, to rack up the teamls fifth straight victory of the 1951 season. The homecoming crowd of around 1000 at the city stadium saw the Weber team add their year's total points to 114 while holding opponents' to only 36. The first half found neither team scoring. However, Weber halfback, Ray Sessions, intercepted a pass from Ray Skillestad and charged deep into the Saint territory. The touchdown was averted as the Saints finally halted the Weberite movement on the 12 yard line. It was quarterback Roger Hall's passing and end Ron Wilkinson's receiving that sparked the Wildcats to the win. Hall started an aerial drive as soon as the second period began. Four passes fired to Wilkinson and a 12 yard end run by Don Shaw moved the ball within inches of the goal line. It was here that Carroll college displayed unusual defensive play as they kept the Weber machine from scoring after both Hall and Lamont Lamb attempted to crash the remaining few inches. Carroll took over the ball and punted, and it was Weber's ball on the Saint 28. A sly double lateral play in which Ed Campbell lateraled to Tony Toscan who then tossed over to Hall started the Weber team to its first score. Hall received the lateral from Toscan and then shot a 20 yard pass to Wilkinson who dashed another 20 into the end zone for the touchdown. Don Budge converted the extra point giving Weber a 7 to 0 lead. A short while later Hall fired a 25 yarder to Wilkinson who slashed off the remaining 25 yards to score Weber's second six-pointer. Budge's kick was good. Neither team came close to scoring during the evenly matched third stanza. About the middle of the final quarter, Hall started the Milt Mecham lads off to their third touchdown. He passed to Tony . Toscan for a gain of about 15 yards. Weber-Carbon Clash Tonight in Price Weber Wildcats will travel to Price for this week's game. As yet Carbon has had trouble beating Weber. In 1950 Weber beat Carbon by a score of 28 to 7 and in 1949 a terrific game with a score of 44 to 25 again went to the Wildcats. More of Weber's stars are on the bench as a result of last Saturday's game with Boise. Coach Mecham has not posted a travel list for the Carbon game, as yet. This game will be played Friday and all students who have cars should load up a gang of fellow Weberites and be on hand for this game. He lunged and snagged the ball out of the air just about the time Bill Clifton of Carroll crashed into him. As a result the ball spurted from him again and went rolling across the turf. Both men pounced for the ball with Wilkinson winning the grab. He picked it up and raced down the field 25 yards for the Weberite's last touchdown. Boise Ekes Out 13 to 12 Win Weber's hopes of playing in the little Rose Bowl or some other bowl game ceased or at least quieted, last Saturday, October 20, after the Wildcats were edged out 13 to 12 by the Boise Broncos on the Idaho field. It was a simple place kick by Bronco Leland Fowler that reeled the Weberites to their first defeat after five straight victories. Defensive play dominated the first half with neither team being able to crash the other's line for a touchdown. In the third quarter the Wildcats pounced on a Boise fumble on the Broncs 35 yard line. Quarterback Roger Hall then shot a pass to end Don Butler who dashed into the end-zone to score the first touchdown of the game. Don Budge's try for the extra-point failed. Weber led 6 to 0. Taking over on their own 30, the Broncs smashed down to the Weber 3 with fullback Dwight Winslow and halfback Merlin Howard doing the smashing. Howard then ripped his way through the Weber line for the remaining three yards to tie the game up. It was at this point that Fowler actually won the game for Boise as he kicked the extra-point giving the local team a 7 to 6 lead. Late in the third stanza, the Boise machine started a drive which ended in a touchdown. The Broncs recovered a Wildcat fumble on the Weberites' own 32 yard line. Five plays later and in the final quarter, Winslow scored for the Idaho team. A short while later Weber's Hall weaved his way around the end and down a broken field 70 yards to give Weber its second score. Budge then missed the all-important try for the extra point. A late rally by the Weber team was stopped by Boise as they jumped on a Wildcat fumble on their own 33. Score by quarters: Weber 0 0 Boise 0 0 612 613 Scoring: Boise Touchdowns, Howard Winslow.
