Coast Game Resembles Spirited Track Meet Eugene Carson Suffers Concussion In Line Play Compton J. C. ran wild against Weber 'cats last Friday to pile up a 60-18 victory over the Ogden gridders and give them their eighth straight win. Best Passing Attack Weber turned loose one of the best passing attacks seen in southern California junior college competition this year, but was plainly out-classed by the coast team. The powerful Compton eleven were out in front of the wildcats only seven points by end of the fisrt period. The score was 13-6. Weber grabbed her touchdown when Milt DeMello passed 50 yards to Ramon Baird. The second six pointer came as the result of a pass from DeMello again to Ray Rhead. This touchdown made in the third quarter while the tartar team had 33 points to show for their efforts. McElhenny Shines Compton full back Hugh McElhenny stood out in the game as one of the deciding factors of the coast victory. So far this year he VETAS Confectionery 28th & Wash. Blvd. For the Best Ice Cream & Malts has averaged 11 yards each time he carried the .ball and has scored over 100 points. His touchdowns were from 81, 76, 11 and two yard runs. Eugene Carson, 185-pound Weber tackle suffered concussion in line play and was taken to the hospital. McElhenny also was hospitalized with a back injury. Mr. Carson played the guard spot for Ogden high school in '46 and was on the wildcat list of gridders last year. Bends Scales He stands 5 feet 11 inches, and tips the no doubt bending scales at 185. His part in making the plays go over is usually taken care of when he opens up the holes for our backs. Too many laurels could not be given Gene for his excellent work on the wildcat line, and for his good judgment as co-captain of the Fullerton game. Gene, does the kind of work that never makes the headlines, but helps determine them. The linemen hardly ever even get their name in a column unless they are injured, although they certainly rate it. Phys. Ed. Major Gene is majoring in Physical Education and is doing a fine job as anyone can tell who has taken in any of the wildcat games this season. Seeing that the nucleus of last years great basketball squad has departed from the halls of Weber, Coach Reed Swenson has been putting the 50 candidates for the team through vigorous workouts during the past week, and is preparing for Weber's first game on Nov. 20, with BYU at Provo. t Keifh's Korner By Keith Hunt The recent Junior College Regional conference held at Weber college was a fine example of how problems can be solved and plans be drawn merely by discussion and cooperation among the various interested, groups. The main topic on the agenda for discussion in the athletic coun cil was the uniting and strengthening of the newly organized inter-mountain JC league. In discussing this problem the delegates agreed that the formation of a plan to choose an all- conference team in every sport possible was desirable in creating interest in the league activities. The way the league setup . is now it would be virtually impossible to pick an all-star squad from the football teams of the league members. Each conference school must play a minimum of four league contests. These follow no set form. The decision as to which conference teams they will play is left strictly up to the coaches. Thus it may end up that no two teams may play each other during the entire season. With such a plan no definite comparison of teams and players could be made to result in an all-conference team. In basketball the situation takes on a little better hue. The casaba league is much more closely knitted with the general standards of league play being molded into the schedule. The task of choosing this all-star squad will be left up to the members of the intersectional athletic commit tee from the various league schools. They in turn should appoint a committee from their own school, from the athletic and publicity councils; instruct, if possible, their local officials, their team coach and team members, to take into consideration on the comparitive abilities of the visiting teams. At the termination of the league play this list, compiled by the schools from their team's opponents, will be mailed to our own athletic committee here at Weber, which has been chosen as the central point to determine the various choics and from us will come the results and the announcement of the all-conference selections. This all-star item was but one of a number of policies decided upon at the intersectional meeting. In importance it ranked first as being the most efficient means r Dial 2-0234 or Drop in at 430 25th St. "We Invite Comparison" Coach Swenson has seven vet erans returning from last years team. Wayne Cottle, first team forward throughout most of last year, is probably the most experienced man to return this year. Capable players such as Thair Blackburn, Lloyd Neville, Bob Preece, Reed Peterson, Marvin Felt, and Jerry Carlile who graced the wildcat hardwoods last year will show their wares again for the purple and white this season.
