Baseballers Take Seven Straight; Annex State Title Weber gained a lopsided victory last week end to take the league bunting, and without a setback scampered away with the Utah State baseball championship. Coach Dean Gardner said a three game series had been scheduled with the Colorado State champs at Grand Junction. Pueblo Jr., who beat out Mesa J. C. for the state title this week found it unable to meet with Weber so this series has been canceled. Sterling Gardner pitched the wildcats to their win over Snow, striking out 4 of the batters that faced him allowing two hits and not allowing a run in his five-inning stint. Lloyd Draayer came into the game in the sixth inning and in the late innings gave up a walk and two home runs to account for the Badger's three runs. He also struck out five men and allowed two hits. Dick Kitamura was the little man with the big bat again bag ging two hits, one a grand slam home run with the bases loaded. Chuck Edson collected three hits to lead his mates in that depart ment. Counting the game Monday against Tooele Ordinance Depot which Weber won 12-9, Dick Kita mura leads Weber's stickers with a booming .514 batting average. "Kit" has also collected three home runs to his credit. Others high on the list are Chuck Edson, .457 Herb Crittenden, .433; Russ Car- ruth, .370 and Monte Frew with .353. Kitamura has collected the most hits with 19 followed by Chuck with 16. "Big Sterk" Gardner in six games has struck out 58 batters chalk ing up six wins and no losses. Seeks Officers From Grads The United States Air Force has announced a program to build an officer corps composed in large part of graduates from colleges and universities throughout the nation, Capt. I. B. Hollomon, Army and Air Force Recruiting Officer for Ogden, said today. College-Trained "The mission of the Air Force involves problems of management, research, operations, and leadership," General Vandenberg's letter said. "Efficient solutions of these problems depend on a highly competent officer corps composed mainly of college-trained men and women.""For college graduates interested in flying careers, the Air Force is reserving a number of places in its summer and early fall Aviation Cadet classes," Capt. Hollomon said. "The purpose is to permit seniors graduating in june to begin pilot training with minimum delay. Seniors who apply now will have their papers processed so that, if qualified and accepted, they will be ready to begin training in one of the early classes following their graduation." Regular Commissions After one year of aviation Cadet training including flight instruction, academic work, and leadership training they are commissioned second lieutenants in the Air Force Reserve, with assign ment to flying duties. Outstanding graduates of Aviation Cadet train ing receive Regular commissions immediately upon completing their training. The others, with Reserve commissions, have opportunities to compete for Regular commissions while on Extended Active Duty. horseshoes were decided last week with Excelsior, Phoenix, and Sigma being crowned champions in those sports, respectively. Jimmy Hill, steady player from Davis high, last year, gave Excelsior its first championship of the year when he eked out a close victory over a rapidly improved Kent Wheelwright from Sigma. Flygare and Nilsson Win Excelsior had a finalist combination in the tennis doubles also, but found that Ron Flygare and Dick Nilsson of Phoenix had a little too much to offer and bowed to them 6-3. Ed Barnes kept Sigma's intramural championship hopes alive by outpitching Montey DeVoer of the Faculty two games to one to cop the crown. Softball championship boiled down to the same two team combination that clashed for the championship last year, meeting again for the laurels. Phoenix Takes One Pheonix, defending champions annexed the top of league one of the two league affair after capturing a playoff game from Alpha Rho, 16-1. The two teams ended league play with seven games won and one lost. Alpha Rho's loss had come at the hands of Pheonix 7-2 and Phoenix had lost to Alpha Rho, 5-2. Sigma Grabs Eight Straight Sigma, who was runner-up in softball last year waltzed through league two with eight straight victories, having their toughest trouble with Excelsior in a game which Sigma won 6-5. The clinch er was put on last week when Sigma, with Keith Sewell pitching both games, took a doubleheader from the vocation team 4-1 and 5-1. The softball championship play offs are to be a two out of three games to decide the winner. The first game was played Tuesday with Sigma taking the victory, 4-2. Exceptional Playing Play throughout the game's en-tirity was exceptional. Keith Sewell and Thair Blackburn hooked up in a mound duel that gave the fans a rare treat. Sigma overcame a one-run deficit in the fifth inning to tie the score 1-1, and proceded to score two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Phoenix's rally in the sixth fell short at one run and the first game went to Sigma. The second game had not been played at press time.
