Solomons Selected for Scheduled Contest Having been requested by the Utah State Fair Board to conduct a beauty-talent contest in search of Miss Weber College of 1951 for candidacy in the state contest for Miss Utah of 1951, and after discussing the matter with the Board of Control, and other college officials, and having met with much controversy (over WHO is the sponsor) and finally approval from all these Dietys, we sought far and near for a modern-day-Solomon for Signposts representative sponsor, to conduct the grand event. While engaging in this search, we observed the fine manner in which our own James Bonner handled his search for Mr. Sox, during the last quarter. Such finess, such endeavor unrewarded. We have therefore appointed post Representative Sponsor of Contest. Due to the conflict with the which one of our college clubs sponsors, our Board of Control has ruled that they, and the Student Body will sponsor jointly with Signpost, this contest. Selected to represent Students is Russ Carruth, and Le Roy McFarland will represent Sigma. Those persons wishing to enter candidates contact one of these gents, and watch Mr. Bonners column for light comment. Prejudice Bared In Race Novel Negroes, as would anyone else in their position, react in numerous and varied- ways to the sure but unwritten law which governs their life and relation to others here in our United States. In order to survive, they resist this law. Some, by a fierce and bitter defiance, others by an almost indolent attitude. Somewhere, moving between these two extremes are the compromisers, those who may at one time find descretion the better part of valor, and later be moved to action by gnawing resentment.Obscure to many, is still another way in which the Negro seeks existence. This is a way based upon complete acceptance of the law. Those people showing this reaction, are convinced that Negroes are naturally inferior, and odd as it seems, work to maintain. their lowly, position. This same strange type of expression is seen in Shelton Howard, the Hero of "Stranger and Alone", by J Saunders Redding. Convinced that there is a special "place" for the members of his race, Howard is not the outraged Negro so often portrayed in novels, but rather, a person working to restrain any advancement, i The orphan of a Negro mother and a white father, -Howard had no concise recollection of either of them, or any type of family, life. At 21, he entered the New Hope College in Louisana as a work student, to be immediately set apart from the other students by his shoddy clothes and self concise appearance. It was there, in a sociology, class that he first heard and accepted the theory of Negro inferiority. After graduation, he worked as a dining-car waiter, hoarding his pay for a much desired education. Later, he was promoted to the rank of teacher, at the Arcadia Graduate School for Negroes, after receiving a scholarship, enabling him to spend two years at the University of New York. At Arcadia, as the Protege of President Perkins Thomas Wim-bush, he managed to find a certain security he had always wanted, but became more convinced of the veracity of the Negro status than ever. President Wimbush, himself, was a powerful advocate of this Judas attitude, and while promoting How- den to Superintendent of Negro Schools in the state, he paved the way for Howden's complete race betrayal. At forty, Howden was a success, secure in his job, and "so contented that his only real worry was a thickening wasteline." All this time, however, the reader is aware of the wrongness of the whole situ ation in which Howden under the shrewd tutelage of President Wimbush, becomes more and more a enemy of the Negro. We may shudder, when he realize that this same weird code which created President Wimbush and has also made Howden what he is, is subtely surrounding hundreds of others. Stranger and Alone is a high the hearts of the multi-million Bobby Sox brigade, Sammy Kaye pitches a little Tiddly Winky Woo". Blvd. (UPSTAIRS) POLEMICS ALAMODE EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is the fourth in a series of pro-con articles on vital local and national problems, sponsored jointly by the Weber College International Relations Club and Signpost. Any student may contribute to this series by arrangement with Harold Bateman, club advisor, or Lawrence C. Evans, Signpost editorial advisor. This week's subject Is: Is the method of religion superior to the method of science in resolving world problems? PRO By Russ Carruth Let me preface my remarks here by saying that I firmly believe the solutions to our existing problems are embodied within the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It appeals to me that wherever there are problems arising from differences between individuals, groups of individuals or nations, the basic factor involved is a misunderstanding on the part of one or more of the conflicting parties. This being so, let me suggest that reconciliation can only be made by a new appraisal of our own position in the light of the situation of the other party or parties concerned. The resultant effect of such an appraisal would be the mutual altering of our way of life to produce the harmony desired. Religion does just that. Religion has within it the power to change men's lives. Consider in your own mind the influence in governing action and solving problems that has come from the great religious leaders of the world. Consider well the profound effect of the three years religious teaching of Jesus of Nazareth. It is true that science also effects the adjustment of life. However, what is the solution V I . ' in science today ! T, rv, k ' K r . J, W V. I 111 t, O 111 thorn in the side of tomorrow If the change is to be effective it must be constant and enduring. Herein religion comes to the fore. The basic, fundamental concepts of character taught by religion are invariables, and when observed bring the peace of mind and state that is experienced as our problems dissolve. Actually, the harmony gained by the change is the dissolution of the problem. The effective change of life is that change which comes from free violation and not from an outside coercive force, for the latter is never binding. Persuasion and long suffering is the method of religion. It is a method that has power and it works. I know, for I have seen it. In the lives of individual with whom I have been closely associated, I have witnessed a change of life brought about by the application of religious principles that has set their lives in order. class, moving novel. Allred As popularly conceived, science is but a body of conclusions from a peculiar type of material or subject matter under investigation. Actual ly, it is the particular way the material or subject matter is dealt with that we have a clue as to the real nature of science. The scientific method can be briefly characterized as follows: (a) Objective verification the investigator's desires, his aesthetic, moral, or religious predilections, his faith in or desire for a particular conclusion, have been carefully eliminated as determining factors. (b) Public verifiability proof extends beyond personal conviction. ANYONE may ; investigate or at gf- ' . , ' least question ' - the validity of . " the assertions. The religious authorities are power less to convince the critic who desires to be "shown" either objectively or publicly, (b) The religious method is not one of rigorously exact proof or disciplined empirical observation but a claim to truth through an allegedly "superior" insight, a possession of revel- ation, or supposedly .logical reasoning. It follows, then, that the criteria for evaluating their claim to truth would be private oes. The religious institutions for their own protection consider doubt intolerable and severely resent being questioned, (c) In common vernacular, once within the fold of the Church you've "arrived; this is it, brother, no use looking any farther." By its very nature, religion cannot face change as does science. ' It is fairly well ' recognized that knowledge is capable of modifying the quality of desires and hence the formation of ends and purposes of life. It is further empirically true that the method of science is , solving physical and biological problems. It remains to be applied to its full' usefullness in the social field and to even be considered as valuable in the entrenched religious sanctuary. It is when the method of science the best AUTHENTICATED means to knowledge we (Continued on Page 3, CoL S) 11 COC--COVA .Refresh Coca Cola Bottling Co., of Ogden |
