(Thomas Jefferson) WE STAND TODAY at an intersection for-our civil liberties an intersection where only reason acts or can act as a policeman to inform us that our proposed route is along a one-way street to totalitarianism. WE HAVE CHARTERED A PATH which denies an inherent right to reason, to think, and to discuss by condoning witch hunts for witches not identified or non-existent. We have done this by slurring, slandering, and forgetting our most basic democratic essentials, freedom and liberty, which hold up the constitutional right to advocate political, social and economic change as their very essence. YOU MAY ASK how we have done, this how we have contradicted our propounded belief in the constitution? It's something not hard to see when we believe and condone such "laws, orders, and actions" as the loyalty order, congressional investigations, and proposed loyalty bills. Executive order 9835' states that reasonable grounds for determining dis-loyalty are: performing or attempting to perform his duties or otherwise acting so as to serve the interest of another government in pref-erance to that of the United States. Membership in, affiliation with, or sympathetic association with any foreign or domestic organization, association, movement, group or combination of persons, designated by the attorney general as totalitarian, fascist, communist or subversive ." Is this the freedom of expression, the liberty of thought we pride ourselves in? WHO IS TO SAY how one serves the needs of his country? Who is to define the meaning of totalitarian, fascism, communism or subversive activities? Who is the attorney general to deprive an individual of a job because his thoughts may be wrong in relation to those of the attorney general's thoughts which aren't necessarily any more 'valid or righteous than the accused? AND ABOVE ALL who is the man who has the power to determine, judge, and penalize an individual without even the consultation of our judicial agencies? This power is usurpation of our courts in that it deprives a man of fair and unbiased investigation of the charges leveled against him. WHY DO WE SUPPORT the very things we fought against and supposedly are willing to fight against again? We say communism is wrong because it places the state above the individual, but yet we practice that very placement by decreeing that individuals can believe only what those in power of the state believe. We place the state above the man by saying that he can believe in only one state, or one nation. THEN WE CONTRADICT our Bill of Rights by depriving individuals of defense in our congressional investigations, we infringe on individual liberties by demanding answers to questions not asked in courts. And we condemn our heritage by saying that no changes in our constitution are allowable, when actually the constitution itself provides even for its own dissolution. THE WHOLE THING boils down to political censorship, and the whole contradiction may be summed up in the Supreme court's Board of Education vs. Barnette case. That statement says: "If there is any fixed star in our constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens by word or act their faith therein." BEFUDDLED Confused Writing By MUDDLE Well, kids, it's nearly the end of another quarter and (if you'll pardon my using such a vile expression) .term papers are due about now. Possibly some of you would appreciate a few helpful sug gestions on how G-Items NOII AUTMOaiTY Of TMI COCA-COIi COMPANY If COCA-COLA BOTTLING COMPANY OF UTAH to write those ar- tdstic masterpieces.Despite the skeptical attitude of some teachers as to the usefulness of such hints and their conten- - 1 tion that now is a " late date for ad- ., i vice here it is. - ' (Little do they know that now is the time most term papers are written after they're due.) First and possibly the most im portant point to remember when concocting one of these monstrosities is to never present anything original. This may shock the instructor into giving you an "A." Don't bother to rewrite your pa per after you ve made the first draft. Hand it in complete with scribbed-in notes, blacked-out mis takes, etc. This will show the teacher that your paper could have been worse. Always wait until after your term project is due to start work on it. This will prevent your becoming obscure as you would if your paper were handed in on time. Find a suitable book and copy from dt verbatim. Don't bother to give credit as this only wastes precious space. Follow this advice and in no time at all you're sure to become the man of extinction in all your classes. Recitation Old Mother Hubbard Went to the cupboard To get the ice-man a bracer. Members of the art department inform me that their recent plaa for pictorial magazines brought far from satisfactory results. Couldn't be a lack of readers here could it? Saturday Nite Veterans who drop out of schools and colleges before completing their training are cautioned that they will be obligated to follow more strict requirements to obtain a VA certificate to re-enter train ing under the G. I. Bill. If any veteran ' desides to change to another institution he must acquire a supplemental certificate from the VA. If a change becomes necessary or if a veteran drops out of train ing before the end of a quarter, he will not be granted one of these certificates until he establishes sat isfactory evidence that he became ill, or that the cause of his withdrawal was due to circumstances beyond his control. He must gain permission from the institution to accept him for further training. It is pointed out that changes will be granted only when the course a veteran desires to follow is no longer available at the institution in which he is enrolled. If this conditions prevails, action will be RECORD R AMBLIN With Bill Sunday afternoon's jam session at the Rainbow Gardens came off in a big way. Everyone there was knocked out by the spontaneous instrumental capers of the local musicians. One number lasted about 40 minutes with the boys trading off every so often and the lucky listeners (me too) were taking it all in, Hope to see all the rest of you cats out there in the future. Ex-Hampton, chirper, Donah Washington, warbles in a great style on her latest Mercury disc. Donah and her all-stars do an especially fine job on "Evil Gal Blues." Milt Buckner's locked-hand piano stylings starts this platter out in a great groove. Man it really rocks. Then a fine vocal by Donah with plenty of support from the all-stars. Reverse side, "Homeward Bound" really has some fine takeoff s (how about that?) Pick up on this intro you'll like it! A catchy unison riff and some more great piano by Buckner. Bit of subtle clarinet by Rudy Rutherford, and Dinah takes over for a vocal ride. Nuff sed. King Cole fans will be pleased to hear a record of his that was cut quite a while ago, but due to certain restrictions has just now been released. Ole King Cole croons "Come in Out of the Rain" in his inimitable style. The reverse side finds King Cole wistfully warbling "Can You Look Me in the Eyes" as the rest of the trio provides an easy listening background. The King never misses. Martha Tilton has coupled with the Ernie Felice quartette on "Every . So Often." Martha is one of the finest gal vocalists around and Ernie is in my opinion the finest accordian man we've found. Will, just off the records, I want you cats to pick up on Murray Jones and his orchestra, who are going to play here at Weber college for the Collegiate Promenade this Saturday. Murray Jones has assembled a great outfit and the battered walls of the ballroom will be resounding to the tunes of a terrific swing orchestra.
