Show SIGNPOST Thursday, October 7, 194$ Pag e 4 Keith's Korner By Keith Hunt Before I get in any deeper this issue, I want to express my most profound apologies to the girls who participated in last year's bathing beauty contest for anything that might have appeared in this column last week. It seemed as though every male on the campus had a different girl in mind as he read the article. It is surprising how un-secret such knowledge really is. But, figuratively speaking, this column is strictly sports, so here goes. This Friday the local boys meet Carbon college in their first inler-mountain battle of the season. As far as can be determined this will be the first time that Weber has faced Carbon JC on the gridiron. These games that Weber plays with other junior colleges in the intermountain region carry a lot more weight than they appear to. It is true that the contests with larger schools such as L. A., Comp-ton, Phe'onix, and other such well known schools are given greater publicity, draw larger crowds, and are generally considered to be our "important" games. As far as getting the Weber name known a little bit around the coast and other areas this may be true, but now that Weber is engaged in a struggle to show her worthiness of being granted four-year status, the place to have our fame known is not on the coast but here in Utah, in the state legislature, from where the decision must come. Our games with inter-sectional opponents merely prove that we are a pretty good little school when is comes to playing big schools. Those games with JC's from Utah and surrounding states do more than that. They prove that we are a great little school among little schools. If we can make this fact evident it will mean a great boost in prestige back in the capital. Jay Jensen was bemoaning the fact to me the other day that our student body has evidently given up cheering at our games. I hardly envy Jay, knocking himself out leading cheers, while the only person cheering Is himself. At the last game it was so quiet during one rendition ..of .."Weber Team" that players sitting on the bench could distinctly hear the "pop" of beer bottles being opened on the top row of the grandstands. Coach Mecham reports that several players took "alky" fits and passed out. Well we won last time but how about making a little noise Friday so the same think won't happen. We may need those players. Wildcat Workout Revealed by Signpost Writer By Lehman Henry You may be wondering why Weber has such a rip-roaring team this year. Just come along with me to the practice field on a typical four to six afternoon and you'll find out! (I know because I'm supposed to be on the team . . . supposed to be, that is.) First of all, I must tell you that there are three drivers stat steer the boys to victory. They are the "brains" of the outfit. These three guys, headed by Coach Mecham (Hickman), crack whips! No kidding. The other two guys are Gardner (Marder) and Ward (Lord). (The last one is the "Big Boy.") Riding on the Weber school bus (so they call it) you finally stop at Monroe park. As you jump out of the bus, a whip snaps, and, Marder pops off with, "O. K., you guys, limber up . . . let's do some straddle hops . . . one, two, three, four, one, two, three . . . faster, faster! That's enough! Come on, let's go! On your feet! . . . Spread your legs and touch the opposite toe with your opposite hand! . . . One, two, three, four . . . one, faster! Faster! Faster! . . .'Now see how high you can jump! . . . Higher! Higher! . . . Come on! Up! Up! (All of the players jump like kangaroos and buang out, "Baung, buang, buang, baung! Hickman then comes over and yells, "That's enough, backs and ends passing over here . . . punters and linemen over there. Come on! Don't act like a bunch of old ladies!" Manager! Get the bags out! . . . No, never mind, let's scrimmage before it rains. Marder! Bring the backs over here! . . . Run! You bunch of lillies! WSftfc Coaches Elmer (Bear) Ward, Milton Mecham, and Dean Gardner, left to right resectively, look over some of top plays they will use against Carbon Eagles. I I Ji t'i -1 Wildcat Captain Don Nielson So, as commanded, the boys run over and . . . "You, you, you, . . . you . . . you, you and you . . . get the red shirts on! Marder, get a set of backs in red! Marder "You, you, you and you, get over there for some defense. Hickman "You, you, you, you . . . line up on the center . . . The rest of you guys (meaning me too) get out of the way! . . . Stand back of the offense!" (So we just stand and freeze for the rest of the night . . . we, meaning the Rinkidinks.) Then they bang ears! Hickman shoots his mouth off again, "Cut right next time, cut right!" So the ball carrier cuts right the next time. "Cut left next time, left, cut left!" So the ball carrier cuts left this time and, . . . "Cut right! You're running right into the tacklers!" Then, Ah! . . . touchdown!Sport Tops and Seat Covers All Colors Custom Made for All Models t Nielson Upholstery Phone 2-7251 1508 Wash. Blvd. c Don Nielson, active tackle on the Wildcats' squad this season will make the decisions for the Weber boys tomorrow night when he takes over the captaincy in the game against Carbon college. Don has had plenty of experience on the gridiron. He made 2nd team Little ail-American last year and also played football at Ogden high school. After his graduation at high school he joined the navy. Probably this was the reason why his weight rose to around 200 and his height to 6 feet 4 inches, all adding upto a good sized boy. Don is married and has one child, making him a veteran of almost everything. He is majoring in physical education here at school which puts him tops in athletics. The team will be in capable hands with Don as captain. ALL KINDS OF SPORTING GOODS KEITH'S SPORT STORE 307 Wash. Kahoonei to Play Louis Kahoonei, talented halfback and Jim Miyasato, a scrappy little quarterback have been watching from the sidelines so far this season because of injuries. Coach Mecham has hopes that the boys may have a playing opportunity Friday in the game. Another veteran of football, Buddy Lau, sprak-ling halfback, also injured in the early season, is expected to be in fine form for this game. Coach Jackson Jewkes of Carbon college boasts a swift passing attack and a strong defense. Coach Jewkes was a star at the University of Utah before taking the helm at Carbon. Have Confidence The game with Los Angeles gave the Wildcats the confidence they need to show the Carbonites some fast ball handling and cool, efficient carrying out of plays. The old saying, "experience is the best teacher," will prove its point when the Weber mentors latch on to the pigskin. Coach Mecham plans to start Ray Rhead and Sterling Gardner at the end posts, Don Nielson and Henry Granberg, tackles; Eugene Carson and Dan Hipa as quards; Lamar Ward, center. Backfield In the backfield the workers will be Milton DeMello, brilliant quarterback from Hawaii; Marv Felt and Bill Kessler in the halfback positions, and colorful Wayne Schmalz at the fullback spot. Weber coaches expect the contest to be close, knowing that their boys will show the Carbon eleven a plenty rough time. KEEP OFF LAWNS WITH STREET SHOES During the week there has been some comment around school about the fellows playing touch football on the playing field while tney were wearing their street shoes. In the past it has been an ardent desire to keep these lawns green and free from the holes that shoes cause. How about cooperating with Mother Nature?
