Show Pade 4 THE SIGNPOST WEBER WILDCATS WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP A We au St by D. Joven Weber has a complete plan for intramural athletics. Much time and labor has been spent to give inlramural activities to the students of Weber for their enjoyment; entirely in their interest. And yet, what has been the response ? The first two events, tennis and horseshoes, ended in flat failure. The reasons for these failures were not because schedules were not drawn, time and place were not stit, and announcenint was not made, but because the students, after signifying intention to participate, failed to show further interest. They stopped the forward movement by not playing the game; they stopped the play-inn of the few who wanted to play. For the third event the directors decided to try team competition (i. e. soitball) in an effort to revive interest. Spirit in team competition rose a few degrees above zero, and the tournament, with a default and one or two postponements, was run off as scheduled. Hut only one or two of the games were marked w'ith interest. As a whole, the softball tournament was not what it should and could have been. The blame for this lack of success in the events so far attempted can be placed mainly in the hands of the students. But specific suggestions for improvement are: 1. Greater activity by directors in conducting tournaments. Failure comes from allowing contests "to take their course." 2. More action by team managers to provide full teams and prompt appearances. 3. Selection of qualified referees before games. 4. Interest of the whole student body in participating; not just the few. The intramural program should not continue to fail. Yet that may easily be the result if more activity is not shown by the Weber student body, and by those in charge. We'll See Wildcats To Close Season Against Albion Saturday, November 20, Coach Bob Davis and his Wildcats journey to Albion for the final football game of the season. "This is without question the toughest game of the season," Davis declared, "but the squad is in fine shape for the battle. Albion was conference champion last year, and has a good team this year; nevertheless we expect to win." Albion recently overpowered Ricks 4 5 to 2, but Coach Davis is confident his team will play better ball than it did against Ricks. The Weber - Ricks game ended in a 13 to 13 tie. Albion is definitely out of the conference race this year because of insufficient games played. Reed is definitely out of the game because of illness, and Clark is nursing a slight ankle injury received in the Westminster Armistice day game. The probable starting lineup: Thomas, center; Nalder and Wol-thius, guards; Wilkins and Hatch, tackles; Clark and Pierson, ends; Miller and Hansen, halfbacks; Cowley, quarterback; Jones, fullback.Talent Contest Gains Momentum (Continued from page 1) plans develop, an assembly featuring the winners of each month will be given. Musical numbers, vocal and instrumental, dancing of all types, orations, readings, and any other kind of wholesome entertainment will be acceptable. A three run rally in the last inning gave the champions the necessary margin for victory. Frenisti jumped into a two run lead in the first inning which they held until the third. At this stage of the game the fielding powers of Frenisti slackened a bit and the Faculty took full advantage of the errors to score all their runs. But the Profs were unable to maintain their lead and the score was tied in the fourth stanza. Then with two men on the bases and no one down F. McQuown hit one against the fence bringing the game to an end. The final inning was played in semi-darkness. Frenisti had previously beaten Phoenix by default and Excelsior 8 to 7. The Faculty had beaten the Engineers 8 to 5. Rivalry between the Faculty and the girl students was intense last Friday the 12th, when the girls won in a softball game by the score of 9 to 4. During the course of the game home-run balls were hit by Marie Cheavers, Mrs. Clark and Marion Garner. Out of Leads . . . Eraser Smears . . . The Armistice day clash turned out to be four periods of red-hot football. Both teams appeared to be evenly matched. The Westminster teams' record read more experience than the Wildcat ma-chin, but the Weberites offset this handicap with speed and deception.Wilkins of the Wildcat lair kept the Westminster team deep in their own territory with long spirals to the coffin corners. Westminster played a hum drum game but failed to penerate the tight Wildcat defense. The whole Wildcat forward wall out-charged, out-blocked and completely out-played the heavier and more experienced line of the opposition.Weber's first score came late in the second period following a 50-yard drive which featured consistent gains by Cowley, Weber quarterback. This chap fairly bubbled with class as he romped around the ends for consistent gains up to the Parson's nine-yard line. At this point Whitesides raced his own right end to give Weber her first and only score. Miller, left halfback, kicked the extra point. Weber was unable to shake loose Westminster during the remainder of the contest although the ball was placed in a scoring position at least four times. This victory added another Utah State Championship to a long line of Weber gridiron honors. The Whip club, the band and hundreds of students added local collegiate color to the champion-, ship battle. The Whip club entertained at the half with a snappy drill.
