This May dance was the first in Sharmea's history and also Vikings first since their revival. Decorations for the ballroom were furnished by both clubs and when completed the lilac sprayed trellises, the picket fence strewn with apple blossoms, and the baskets of varied lilac, cherry, and peach blossoms more than sufficiently filled the hall with the spirit of spring. To carry out the "Cruise", a Viking sail of white muslin with a blue flag bearing the names of both clubs was hoisted behind the orchestra seats. Smaller sails, one dedicated to each social club, both boys and girls, were draped across the doorway on the opposite side of the ballroom. Evidently the dance boasted a turn-out of at least one member from each club, because at the end of the dance not one flag was left. Cut-outs of Viking ships lined the stairway, and at the tnn o oii ing gave the full effect of the Vi sing seawortny ship sailing in the apnng time spirit ot Sharmea. Refreshments consisted of cherry iawaiiiui puncn ana butter cookies of green and pink, signifying one of the colors of each club. The orchestra of Glenn Van Leu-wen played, without intermission until eleven-thirty. Is Women's Place In the Kitchen? The old adage that "women belong in the kitchen" might have influenced grandmother to stay at home, but grand daughter no. At least Weber college women pay little heed to such proposals In fact, the girls have forsaken that kitchen and entered the Secretarial Science classes in unprecedented numbers. Over 85 students have taken training in shorthand courses alone this year. The quantity though impressive for a Junior college, is less significant than the quality of their work Mr. Christensen, whose students at Dixie college, placed first in the Intermountain Commercial Contest at Provo in 1942, finds that the Weber students rank with the best. It is no longer news when some secretary-applicant passes an official 140-word writing. From Gregg college in Chicago comes word that Dick Montgomery, a winter quarter student at Weber, has just completed his examinations on the 175-word take. That is rapid writing, and we are proud of Dick. Many qualified girls have left the classroom for the office this year. However, the diamond rings put in a regular appearance, which leads Mr. Christensen to believe that the kitchen has its points too! Women's Banquet Held on May 2 A banquet of the Women's Athletic Association was held in the cafeteria May 2 to announce the officers for next year. Both greeting and toast were given in poetic form, and Bernice, acting as toastmistress, introduced others to also give toasts. Mrs. Russel Petty addressed the girls and commented on the growth of the organization, and its continual growth. She praised the officers of WAA for their work, and also Mrs. Gregory, Miss Welling, Coach Mecham, and President and Mrs. Dixon for their support to the association. Special thanks and recognition was given to "Gertie", to which all the girls applauded heartily.
