In the early stage of the game, Mesa held a slim lead but the Wildcats came back before the first half ran out and took command as the first half ended. During the third period of play, both quintets displayed heads-up ball and as the skirmish moved on toward its end ing, the Wildcats blasted the web with consistency which kept pushing them further in front. It was Weber's sharpshooting Prank Hazen who supplied the offensive sparkle to clinch the victory. Hazen, firing in 13 field goals and a charity throw which netted him a total of 27 markers, put on a brilliant performance and was definitely the scoring spring for the victorious Weber five. Mesa's co-captain Orin Richards was the main cog in the maverick offense as he poured 15 counters through the ring. Dick Morris, a team-mate was close behind as he chalked up 11 points. The contest marked thenext-to-last home game appearance that the Weber 'Wildcats made this year in the jaycee basketball race. Weber 91, Carbon 35 Scoring with every sort and type of shot in the book, a sizzling Weber college five trounced the cellar-dwelling Carbon college cagers 91-35 before a full house at the Weber gym. It marked the final home-game appearance for the Wildcats. The hoop-happy Weber-ites rang the bel for 37 field goals as they blasted Carbon off the court. Carbon was really never in the ball game as Weber roared to a tremendous 24-1 lead through the first period. During the second canto, Weber held Carbon to 13 points, while burning the hoop with 19 counters. After intermission the purple and white clad Weberites continued on as torrid as before, adding 48 big points to their ever mounting score and as the clock ran out ending the skirmish, Weber's high-scoring Wildcats found themselves roosting atop of a 91-35 score which went down in the books as the highest score of the season. Carbon simply didn't have a chance against the league-leading Weber team. Coach Reed Swenson threw his entire squad against Carbon. All-conference Don Jesperson, high-scoring star was the offense terror of his victorious team as he j And in This Corner . . . By Jolly Roger Before the basketball season gets all wound up this week end we we being Jerry Peart, illustrious Signpost basketball writer and myself thought it would be a good idea to write up a little sketch of each of the members of this Weber college team, a team rightfully claiming the title of Weber's greatest. Little needs be said of Cocaptain Don Jespersen, forward. He has become well known and widely acclaimed by Weber college fans and well known and dreaded by opponents. All conference forward and all tournament forward at the Compton tourney last year, Don BERRETT, JESPERSEN EXTEND JAYCEE SCORING LEAD Two Weber college basketball stars are leading the pack in scoring in the Intermountain Junior College conference. Center Kenny Berrett and Forward Don Jespersen, both candidates for all conference honors, are the two top scorers of the loop after eignt games. Terrific scoring sprees by the two stars along with the entire Wildcat team over last week-end put Berrett and Jespersen far ahead of their fellow performers in the jaycee loop. Frankie Hazen, scrappy Purple and White forward, who last week broke into the top 15 of scoring for the first time, got hot Friday night to score 27 points and lead the Wildcats to victory over a stubborn Mesa team, at the same time lifting himself to eleventh spot among the scorers with tenth high est average per game was the high scorer of the Intermountain Junior College conference last season with an average of better than 15 points per game. This year he is second in line for that distinction and may pull into the lead before the season ends. Be sides his scoring value, though, he is considered by most fans as the most outstanding all around performer of the league, his floor play, ball rustling and passing being excellent, no less. Starting at the other forward for Weber is Frankie Hazen, commonly referred to as "scrappy Frankie Hazen," for that's just what he is, mainly. He adds a lot of fire to the Weber attack. Last week end he distinguished himself by rolling up a higher score m one game than any member of the team has been able to. He pulled Weber out of a hole against Mesa and bucketed 27 points. The next night he put in 17 more and boosted his standing in the league scoring records considerably.Cocaptain Kenny Berrett, at center, is the league's leading scorer. He is a brilliant performer under the basket at getting tip-in shots. An all region selection in his days at Weber high, Kenny was recently married to one of that school's fafir coeds. Fred Stringham plays guard for the potential champs. Last year he was a second string selection for all conference. Defensive play was then and is now his forte, and he's a tough man to get around. Last year he was selected by the coeds as preferred man, and he smgs, too. At the other guard is Joe Kenney, who, like Stringham, was second string all conference last season. Kenney is a fast and dependable performer who, although he doesn't score much himself, makes it pos sible for a lot of the Wildcat scor ing to be done by his stellar play. He is also a tennis star. "Rabbit" Watts is a great favor ite with the fans. Rabbit is a "good little man." The crowd gets great delight out of watching little Rabbit outclass and baffle the much larger opponents. He inspires many a ral ly. Incidentally, few people know that this former Murray high school star s real name is Cloris. Ron, the other half of the Watts combine, has some of his smaller brother's qualities of speed and cleverness and plays a good, dependable all around game at guard. Harv Stone is also a great favorite with the crowd. When Announcer Milt "Moochum" announces that Stone is entering the lineup the fans, remembering that he once made a basket for Utah State (his chief claim to fame), yell, "Oh, no! No!" But it's all in fun, for they know also that he has played some outstanding ball, and that he was Berrett boosted his total but lost a tenth of a point in his average in last week's games. He ran his eight-game total to 119 points for an average of 14.9 per game. Jespersen, last week second in game average but fifth in total, leaped to second position in both departments with an accumulation of 116 points for 14.5 per game. R. AUred, Signpost Sports Editor Only two opponents stand between the high-riding Weber college Wildcats and their second straight conference basketball championship. The Purple and White cagers have only to win one of their two games this week-end to capture the Intermountain Junior College conference flag. Weber goes on the road, meeting Dixie college at St. George on Fri day, then swinging on to Cedar City to take on the second-place Broncos of Branch Agricultural col lege there Saturday. If the Wildcats lost both games it would give the Broncos a tie for the league title, but a win in either sews it up for Weber and a loss In either seems rather unlikely after the showing the Wildcats have been making in recent games. Weber Has Clean Slate The Wildcats have maintained a clean record in eight league games to date and will thus go into the contests with the two southern teams, both of which they have defeated before, decidedly favored to win. BAC has a record of 3lx wins and two losses for second place in the loop standings, and Dixie has won four and lost an equal number to gain a tie for third spot with Snow college. The Broncs are given the best chance to upset the high-scoring Weberites. BAC has been a powerful squad all season and on their own floor may gain the victory they missed rather narrowly at Weber. The Broncos have proved themselves a better aggregation than their Dixie college iflvals by taking three out of four games that the two teams have played this season. Another factor that is in BACs favor is the fact that the visitors from Ogden will probably be tired from their trip and from what may be a tough game with Dixie on the night before. Nevertheless, most fans concede that the junket to the south of the state is just a formality for the Wildcats, who seem to have their title just about in the bag. The big objective for the Weberites now ds the Western States junior college tournament at Compton, Calif., which they have been invited to participate in. costarred with Hazen in the Mesa game. Wilbur Braithwaite has come into his own as the season has progressed. Seeing little action in ear- y games because his legs, filled with shrapnel, some of which still remains there, in Germany were still weak, he has strengthened his legs and his performance in later competition. He plays a consistent brand of ball in the center spot. Wilbur is a brother of Boyden Braithwaite, well-beloved former head of the L. D. S. Institute. Most people have about forgotten that the name of the tallest man on the team is Harold, it's been Fete Poorte for so long. Now they call him Specs because he always plays with his glasses. He'd be blind without them, they say. Pete starred in basketball and was stu dent body president at Ogden high a few years back. Ray Malmrose hails from Brig- ham City, where the Malmrose family has been making basketball history at Box Elder high school for a number of years. He plays brilliant ball at guard for the Wildcats now. Big Thad Tippets started late for the Weber team and hasn't had a chance to see much action, but what he has played and his performances as regular center at Ogden high last year prove that he's a capable performer who will be in for a lot more action next season. Well, there you have 'em, all 12 of 'em, a great bunch of boys who are sure, we think, to bring Coach Reed K. Swenson and Weber another title and more laurels in the coming Compton tournament.
