At the beginning of an athletic season in any sport, prospects are usually spoken of as being very bright. Occasionally someone dealing in the psychological effect announces that the future of the school in that particular field is rather dim. After winning the state basketball championship last year Weber now faces another season, but the prospects are as yet unannounced. Let's tell about them. From last year's varsity squad return four men, the Morris brothers, Clyde and Floyd, Buster .Bingham, Charles Clark. Four of five regulars make any school look good. Then Earl Miller of the year before last's varsity is with us again, to improve matters. High schools of the state have given to Weber an outstanding group of hoopsters. Take for instance LaMar Briggs and Phil Revell, all-state guard and for ward of the Ogden High team of three years ago. Harland Pack-ham, captain of the Ogden High team last year, is putting in his bid for a position. From Weber County High comes Jack Thomas, not only a football player of ability, but a basketball man who knows his stuff. Noble Fishburn learned to play in the gym at Box Elder. According to Arlo Childs, Max Wilkins, of South High, is as good as "Dutch" Jacobsen, captain of last year's varsity. Another candidate from South High is John Paul Jones. Monday, when practice officially started, a large group reported in the gym and the forming of another state championship team was started. Efficiency isn't required. There are sports to interest the most exacting student. Intramurals in the social clubs have proved more successful than intramurals in the recently organized clubs. The "Traveling Trophy" may be the cause for enthusiasm in competitive sports. It is awarded to the club with the most points. Maybe a trophy would help to bring out more girls in the elective clubs. Something should be done. The instructors are ready, willing, and competent, but the chances to prove their efficiency are limited. The girls really should take advantage of the opportunities and benefits derived from the associations and amusements of sports. Wildcats Place 3 Men on All-Star Eleven The 1937 football season came to a virtual close November 20 with the Weber - Albion scrimmage, leaving the Wildcats the intermountain junior college champions for 1937. The Wildcats obtained the championship as a result of defeating all teams in good standing in the conference. Albion forfeited its right to participate for the intermountain J. C. title by violating the conference ruling concerning the number of official league games that should be played to compete. Albion played only Ricks College of Idaho and Weber in league competition. Bob Davis, new football mentor, led his team to the State and Intermountain championships through a good season. The Wildcats met and defeated B. A. C. 25 to 0, Dixie 18 to 0, Westminster 7 to 0 and tied Ricks 13 to 13; however, this game was awarded to Weber because Ricks had an ineligible man playing. Weber also played an intersectional game with Compton at California, losing to this powerful team 13 to 4. As a result of this fine showing the Wildcats placed three men on the junior college all-star football eleven. Captain Charley Clark, John Paul Jones, and Jack Thomas were picked by coaches, players and officials as outstanding players in the conference along with three players from Albion, two men from Ricks, two men from Westminster, and one player from B. A. C. Clark earned his position on the mythical eleven by starring week in and week out. The former Davis lad was a superlative blocker. He was rangy, fast, and absolutely glue-fingered on the receiving end of a forw-ard pass. He definitely was the best end in the conference.Thomas made the first squad with ease. His opponents rank him as the hardest hitting center in junior college competition. His ability to diagnose plays and the manner in which he fairly breathes power and ability did much for the Weber team. John Paul Jones, weighing 180 pounds and standing 5 feet 10y2, was Weber's triple threat extraordinary. He was such a great ball carrier that he ran for touchdowns any time one was needed. He was a superlative kicker and the hardest running back in the j. c. league. Whitesides was chosen on the second all-star team. Jajsee Honor Klevens IstTeniu Ton. UihI Team Ashby le Hiilming B. A.
