Show I Page Six THE SIGNPOST THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1940 ' Weber Slates Annual Water Carnival, 'W' Day Weber college swimming club and the recreational swimming class polished their strokes and formations today in final preparation for the annual "W" day and Water Carnival to be held at Lagoon, May 31. Unlike last years carnival, "W" day will be ruled by a king and queen selected by the student body. Candidates who have been petitioned as king are: Daniel Bradshaw, Jerry Clark, Wayne Boyle, and Von Holt. Candidates for queen are: Betty Lou Balch, Ruth Packer, Kay Blaes, Rama Eyre, and Beverly Peterson. "This year's carnival promises to be larger and better as well as different from last years success ful carnival" states General Chair man Daniel Bradshaw. The plans for the day are: intramurals which will include a baseball game be tween the Excelsior championship team and "Weber All-Stars," a horse shoe pitching match, and a volley ball game between the faculty and the unaffiliated championship teams. These events will start at two p. m. At four p. m. there will be an intramural swimming meet. From six p. m. seven p. m. time will be taken out to eat lunch while the band presents a concert. The climax of the day will be the coronation of the king and queen who will reign over the carnival. Fun and merriment will top the day in the various fun sports and the dance hall. Arrangements have been made with the management to allow students with student body cards special rates. Those desiring to go in private cars will be admitted for 25 cents whether you have your own bathing suits and towels or not. A script ticket, allowing one ride on all amusements may be obtained for 50 cents. Charlie HotM One Will Reiqn at Water Fest... We finished second in the conference football standings. But sports writers hailed the Wildcats lis tile uncrowned champions of the Jaysee conference. This was undoubtedly due to the fact that the Weber boys trimmed the vul nerable Pasadena Junior college eleven and the conference champs themselves. In selecting the all-conference team, the Wildcats dominated both the first and second places and honorable mention as well. Bright Prospects Next year's prospects are equally bright. Coach Bob Davis has arranged an excellent football schedule for next fall and a string team should be in there defending "ye olde poiple and white." Weber should also enter a strong basketball team in the conference race next winter. Indications for success in the minor sports are also apparent for the Weber teams next year. Indeed it would not be too optimistic to predict another banner year for the Weber Wildcats in 1940-41. Weber Gymnasium The athletic facilities at Weber are excellent. There is not a junior college in the Rocky mountain area which can boast as fine an athletic plant as Weber gymnasium. It is not only the finest junior college gymnasium but also the best gym in the state. With free hours every afternoon, the Weber students have taken advantage of this splendid $400,000 athletic plant. It has also been at the free disposal of intramural department and with the addition of the Central gym, the intramural department has enjoyed its most successful year. With this splendid athletic set-up there can be no doubt but what intramurals will grow in popularity. All we need now is some wire around the tennis courts. Scoop Here s once when I scoop the scandal column. Kate Graham corresponds with five Missionaries. This is a pause which we welcome, for it will at last give us an opportunity to look over this year's activities and pick up those juicy little personal tidbits which can happen in , any gymnasium to any coed. Somewhere around the campus there is supposed to be a badminton tournament and a Softball tournament going on, but the coeds seem more interested in wandering off to an extra game of tennis between classes or to a nice cool swim. I don't know where Ruth Tomlinson is right now but you might try the tennis courts. House Cleaning Is Finished By the way, the swimming pool started to slip in popularity during exam week of last quarter and has just recently started to come into it's own rights again. The pool was drained and painted recently and the water is cool, and clear, and wet, and soft as silk. Girls, with water like that, you don't even care that it takes the curl out of your hair. So Help Her This isn't exactly a paid advertisement, but never the less, Elaine Williamson is working pretty hard lately. Her most recent headache is the swimming carnival. From all appearances, Miss Williamson would appreciate it if the Signpost subtly reminded you that she needs more girls for swimming. This is an invitation to even those of you who can only float on your back. Bus Stop Thelma Kendall seemed to enjoy her trip with the psychology and sociology classes to Provo. During their twenty-minute stop at the University of Utah campus, Thelma mastered the art of walking along their brick wall. Those chosen to enter the meet are: Willie Thomas, Ray Freeman, Bill Lundy, Bob Lathrop, Blair Evans, George Stewart, and Carl Anderson. Trophies will be awarded for first places at the meet. Track Coach Losee says that he expects to return with at least three trophies from the meet. This meet concludes the track activities for the season. viously a "U" student, asked her, "Can you do any more tricks?" Questions: Who threw the tennis shoes, lunch, and love letter out of the Signpost window? They are still on the roof to the side entrance of the Moench building. Who threw all of the chairs out the window of the Acorn office? Or was somebody just stringing me to see how much would get printed? What coed got stung at the AWS outing? The insect referred to was a bee, of course. Why isn't Paul Blood a reporter? He manages to keep track of the softball games in the park. We did alright, too, but some of the older guards won't admit it. They re just jealous. Anyway, it was fun while it lasted. Christiansen Receives Trophy Alan Christiansen was the recipient of the Armstrong trophy presented last Friday in the annual award assembly. The Armstrong All-Around athlete trophy is presented each year to the outstanding athlete who ex-cells in leadership, scholarship and athletic ability. Alan filled all the requirements for the award. He has been active in sports as a quarterback for two years, forward on the basketball team for two years, and star performer in the low hurdles for the track team, two years. Every student in Weber knows "Chris" for his outstanding achievements. Perhaps his most outstanding performance in football was against Western State college. So impressed were the coaches and faculty members of that college they have offered him a two-year scholarship to that school. He also excelled at the J. C. conference invitational meet at Provo this Tracksters Place Third In J. C. Meet Wildcat tracksters went down fighting before the onslaught of Mesa junior college of Grand Junction, Colorado; which swept all other opposition aside to win the intermountain jaysee track and field crown at the intermountain junior college conference meet, held at the University of Utah stadium May 10, in Salt Lake City. Superiority of the Mesa team showed in the number of points collected. Mesa was first with 66 points and Ricks second with 43 points. Weber followed closely with 41'i points. Willie Thomas of Weber was high point man of the meet, winning first in both high and low hurdles; fifth in the discus and a member of a winning relay. Records were broken in the pole vault, mile run, 880-yard run, 440-yard dash, discus, shot put, javelin, 880-yard relay, and mile relay. Ricks stole the show in the sprint events with Lamont Wilcox winning the 100 and 220-yard dashes. Ricks also took first and second in the mile, setting a new record with the time of 4:33.8. The Wildcat 880-yard relay team composed of Willie Thomas, Alan Christensen, Eldon Gardner, and Ray Freeman set a new record with the time of 1:32.2, two seconds faster than previous record. Other Weber tracksters who came in for places were Ray Freeman in the 100-yard dash, George Stewart and Eldon Gardner in broadjump, Norris Nelson in high jump, Alan Christensen in low hurdles, Alan Bader in pole vault, La Mar Green and Bill Lundy in mile, and Frank Mann, Howard Page, Jerry Young, and Cherry in the mile relay. Glen year by taking first in the low hurdles. He placed second to his mate "Willie" Thomas in the high hurdles, and was a member of the 880-yard relay team that established a new conference record. Congeniality and leadership of a fine quality was shown by "Chris" as president of a social dub for one quarter, and as co-captain of the track team. Throughout two years of college work Alan has maintained a high average in scholastic ability. RENT BICYCLE For Your Club Parties (George Stone) 10c hour till 7 p. m. 15c hour 7 p. m. till? It has been arranged so those in the class can ride up to the course in the bus and play golf all quarter, during school hours, for only one dolla fee. This year Coach Bob Davis' competitive golf team had a successful year. This will be especially true when they defeat University of Idaho Southern branch in their match Tuesday. The team this year was composed of eight members. These boys competed against B. Y. U. twice, winning one and losing one. They also split two matches with Logan high and won Idaho Defeats Wildcat Netters Idaho Southern university netteri again demonstrated their supremacy over the Weber Wildcat tennis team by giving them only one out of eight matches. However, the individual scores were much closer than this lopsided figure might indicate. The single victory is accredited to the doubles team of Blaine Felt and Conrad Pearce. Weberites who attended the dual meet at Pocatello, Tuesday May 14, were Wayne Boyle, Glen Freeman, Blaine Felt, and Conrad Pearce. a previous match with U. I. 3. B. Undoubtedly next year the advanced golf class will be much larger because of the interest in elementary golf this year. This in turn will make more prospects for the team and Coach Davis says, "I plan on having a ten-man team in 1941 with the best five making a trip to Colorado." COMPLIMENTS of S H.
