Going to Pocatello, Idaho, for their first out-of-town game, the Purple and White gridderii rolled up an impressive 20-0 third quarter lead, but then saw their goal line crossed for the first time when the Idaho Southern Bengals rolled over two counters to make the final count 20-12. Undiscouraged by a Gila college score in the first five minutes of the game, Weber went to work to march down the field and score themselves, Dick Williams leading the way and making the touchdown and adding the point to put the locals ahead, 7-6. Monsters Score Again In two plays after Weber scored, Gila had another touchdown. It surprised the Weber team and root ers alike when, almost before the small crowd finished cheering the Wildcat touchdown march, the opponents pulled a reverse on the runback of the kickoff and went to midfield, then pulled abehind-the-line pass that sent Woods scurrying down the sideline to put the Monsters ahead, 12-7. Again the kick was blocked. Displaying a much improved brand of play in the second half, the Weberitcs, led by Williams and Fullback Lloyd Thompson powered, passed and scooted for a sustained drive that made the difference. After that backfield pair had carried the leather down to the one-yard stripe, Jimmy Valentine took the ball over on a buck lateral. Excelsior came from behind to tie up the score early in the second period, but were defeated in the closing minutes of play when Sigma connected with a sensational pass play into the end zone. Add Extra Touchdown That would have won the game, but the Wildcats, just to make it definite, made another touchdown. Fred Paoli, Weber guard, who had assigned himself the task of picking up loose balls all afternoon, pounced on his third fumble when Gila dropped the kickoff on its own 26 yard line. That gave the Purple and White the chance it needed, and a few plays later Gary Gourley caught a Smokeless Smoker Excelsior and Phoenix are working late these evenings in preparation for their smokeless smoker. Although he weighs only 160, the tough little fullback hits a line and keeps going, refusing to be downed. He and Williams, with bits of able assistance from Valentine, were the offensive standouts. The whole Weber line continued its brilliant all around play. OGDEN'S FINEST MEN'S CLUB! A large group of hoopsters began working out daily under Coach Swenson Nov. 5. Included in the list of hopefuls are all but one of the championship first five of last year, as well as some of the other members of last year's squad and a bevy of promising new performers. By Jolly Roger Harry Burchell got off another terrific kick at the Gila game. It traveled about 65 yards over the Gila goal line, and nearly duplicated tne masterpiece he kicked in the Pasadena game, causing so much comment. Big Harry is really a great kicker, and he has been an invaluable aid to the team. Gridders Appreciate Support The football team says thanks for the support they received at their first out-of-town game. At Pocatello the handful of Weber rooters more than kept up their end of the cheering against the Idaho South ern homecoming crowds. About half a dozen carloads of Weber students made the trek to the game and really gave a grand account of themselves. When Idaho Southern's homecoming parade entered the stadium before the game, the middle of it turned out to be cars flying the Purple and White of Weber and filled with shouting, bell-ringing, cider-drink ing Weber students. TLieutenant' Cheerleader Garfield The boys and girls from Ogden stole all the thunder that day with incessant cheering. Lieutenant Rulon Garfield became a 'second string cheerleader" and really stirred things up. With his bat tered canvas hat m one hand and a jug of cider in the other, he led everything from "Rah!Rah-and-half! Swenson!" to "Happy Birthday to You" for Gary Gourley. Idaho Southern's homecoming queen even carried Weber's colors around the arena at halftime ceremonies. Garfield slipped a pair of purple and white pom poms in the license plate holder of her car. He met an untimely downfall, though, when he started to warm up like the players, running up and down the bleachers, and fell. It was a tough contest between the con crete and Garfield's head, but the harder force was triumphant, and Garfield came up fighting.
