Show What Big Dog Did. Frank Baccarine, a shoemaker at Mount Vernon, N. Y., committed suicide sui-cide by throwing himself in front of a train. A big Newfoundland dog that he had befriended tried to end his own existence in the same manner and at the same place. As a fast train approached, ap-proached, the dog got between the rails, and, looking toward the engine, with his head bent sorrowfully, waited for death. The engineer blew his whistle, whis-tle, but the dog stayed there. Every eye in the station was fastened on him, for several women had cried out in alarm. The cowcatcher struck the dog and threw him Into a ditch. He waa not killed. He jumped up and Instantly Instant-ly pursued the train, trying to get under un-der the wheels of the coaches. Policeman Police-man Atwell ran out and seized him, preventing the suicide. The dog then darted off with a howl in the direction of the river, and no one has seen him since. Atwell thinks the dog drowned himself. |
