Show Terrible Crime in France. A shocking crime is reported from Lille, where a boy of 12 named Foveau, a pupil of the Christian Brothers' school, has been brutally outraged and murdered. The boy having disappeared disap-peared the police searched the house and examined everybody. They were able to satisfy themselves as to one point namely, that Foveau had not gone outside. Making another search they found the body in a box in the visitors' parlor. The face was black, and the tongue protruding. Traces of fingers showed on the neck and the arms were, covered with bruises. The police had opened the box before, so that the body must have been put Into In-to it subsequently. The doors of the school were locked, and orders were given to prevent anybody from leaving. leav-ing. Beside the body a note was found with the words: "Do not accuse the community. There is but one guilty man. The Judge d'lnstruction aeked all the Christian brothers to write down this sentence. One of them who refused has been arrested on the charge of murder. The victim's father, grandfather, and uncles were asked to view the body, the mother being so overcome that she took to her bed. The brother charged with this crime ii known as Brother Flaminien. He is 35, and was born in Alsace. The crime caused the deepest indignation among the inhabitants. On Thursday bands of demonstrators proceeded to the religious re-ligious establishments and to the editorial ed-itorial offices of the Catholic papers uttering ut-tering indignant cries against the clergy. cler-gy. Stones were thrown at the windows win-dows of the Pensionnat Saint Joseph, and the windows of the offices of the newspaper Croix du Nord were also smashed. Twenty-five arrests were made. |
