championship title A tall fall of rain the night pre the morning ot of the opening day put the fine track in splendid condition the fine new grandstand one of 0 the best and most commodious south of salt lake strong well light ed and well protected from stray balls etc was appreciated by visit ors and home people alike there were a number of 0 attractions not shown on the original program which would have drawn a larger crowd had they been arranged for and ad verti sed earlier among these were wrestling and boxing matches be tween men prominent in these sports high diving strong man teats feats etc Mi Ili estling ind and boxing tuesday afternoon a wrestling bout best two out ot of three falls was pulled off between henry jones of provo and J W evans the little giant of tulsa oklahoma it was an exciting wrestle jones proving himself more proficient than his stronger opponent and winning the bout the first fall was won in 12 minutes the second in 18 minutes and the third in three minutes tuesday night nights s preliminary box ing between gar andrus and art crosby three rounds caused lots of amusement and was decided a draw following this was a three round wrestling bout between art smertz intermountain welterweight cham chain pion and pete alias the greek cham chain pion smertz had about three pounds advantage in weight over the greek it was a game exhibition both being about equal in proficiency and was as lively from start to finish the first tall fall was won by smertz in 34 minutes the second by alias allas in one minute and the third by smertz by a toe hold la in 23 minutes ed schellenberg was vas the referee A boxing bout 3 rounds followed the contestants being calvin andrus and rulon bantam weights the little fellows worked fast to a draw causing lots of tun fan the final number tuesday night was a wrestling bout three rounds to a draw not to exceed one hour be tween ed schellenberg of salt lake and cyclone workman of san francisco both men gave a good exhibition of masterly wrestling and despite the tact fact that they struggled hard tor for the full hour in one round neither succeeded in obtaining the mastery and it was declared a draw the winner of 0 this bout was to meet reet ira dern tor for the world worlds s champion ship the next night as neither won they tossed up to see which would meet dern workman winning in this and the previous wrestling clean work was manifest workman paying a tribute to the clean work of schel lenberg the strangle hold was the only one barred wednesday night a boxing bout between henry jones of provo and dean park ot of orem six rounds tor for a decision was fought it was chely and did not last the six rounds park being knocked through the ropes in the third round laying outside the ring while he was counted out and was then carried off in a dazed con the big event followed a wrestling bout between ira dern of salt lake the world s middleweight champion and cyclone workman tor for the world s championship the first tall fall was won by dern in 11 minutes 45 seconds with a toe hold the second fall was won by workman in 12 mm min utes 31 seconds dern won the third tall fall in 12 minutes and 14 seconds picking workman up and putting him cleanly down on his back a pretty bit of 0 work pete alias referee dern did not have the crowd with him alter after the first round as be lie cruel ly punished workman after the lat ter had cried enough at its con elusion dern proved himself a wonderful wrestler wriggling and squirming out of tight places when it appeared he was being held tor for good his ability la Is amazing workman was exceedingly good and was cheered heartily by the big crowd ti f j other sports the double roping was good some remarkably good time being made Heck lethorn and garrett were first roping their animal in 38 seconds and shanley second in 48 seconds Heck lethorn and comes carnes third one minute 23 seconds the novelty roping break away was a scream the crowd being hilar ious lous it was a great event and much enjoyed there were nine contest ants garret getting first place in 11 seconds henry comes cornes second in 11 25 seconds william shanley third in 12 r seconds the toot foot race between herbert milne and arnold thompson 50 yd dash was won by milne double roping second day was won by cornes and findlay in 31 seconds 12 teams entering the steer riding was won by lester parker of wolf hole the baseball games between call ante nev and st george were good the caliente team consisted of olsen herman sheerwood denton crane pitcher morris clyne and dean the jt t george team chester white head clinton milne bryant lund whipple storm grant lund arthur haten hafen and woodbury pitcher the first game was won by st george the score being 5 to 3 the second game was won by caliente with exactly the same score there not being time to play the third game it was declared a draw and the prize divided W G letourneau circus billy formerly with ringling Hin gling s circus now of 0 the salt lake fire department sta tion number I 1 gave thrilling exhibit eions of his skill with a trapeze rom an rings etc at halt hour intervals a platform was erected on top of the grandstand at a height of 50 feet from the ground from which he jumped into a net property of salt lake fire department held by men below J W evans of tulsa okia okla the little giant gave exhibitions at in of his wonderful strength he is short but very muscular he allow ed a nash auto to nde ride over his ach nothing to protect it bent 40 penny spikes with his bare hands bit into iron etc the electric theater ran two good shows each night and the dances were well patronized A splendid program was giden in the tabernacle just before the fruit feast which concluded the carnival which included selections by the band talks by mayor miller pres snow and W 0 bentley jr a solo by dilworth snow and a grand chor us number by f he dixie college chor us the program was greatly enjoy ed the fruit feast which followed was wonderful dixie s best was there in profusion watermelons grapes peaches figs and all kinds of other fruit several tourists joined the throng on the tabernacle grounds and expressed delight at the delicious favor flavor declaring they had never tast ed any to equal the fruit biere here the news has not yet secured the winners at the fruit exhibit so will hold that over until next week |
