tribune while the task of relining brakes la Is one marll f r an ail experienced re the operation opt ration can be per formed by those who rho enjoy doing their own work worl it they will but devote the time required to do it efficiently the method to be followed being explained herewith I 1 arst purchase the new lining in one I 1 alece cutting the necessary lenktis after the w I 1 eels and brakes have been ren oved fhe correct length of material Is obtained by laying a tape measure round around the outside of the external brake band ni biking an art allowance of about one half inch overlapping at the edge sf f tie band opening this u clies rhes the proper length for one extein 14 b 0 no 0 r fig 2 wire the band to hold it in place sal urd brake from which one and one halt balf inches should be deducted to fo the length of the internal brake to prevent slipping to guard against any accidental it lipping after the rear wheels have been jacked up place the axle on good strong borses 1 it the latter are not available block the front wheels heels se curdy cutely to present prevent the car from roll ing ahead or back oft off the jacks be ture sure that you are tl orough ly f ted with the brake shoes and the w ju ament screw removed from the guide that acts upon the anchor bar NN ith tl ti e removal of the co I 1 springs that aie attached to the band the brake u will ill be ready redy to be taken off here a word of warning may be necessary before removing carefully note which Is abe top and which Is the bottom of the assembly and see ast how bow the lie spring pring lining to achs 1 band then drive out the old rivet enell 1 ith a punch y 5 billow allow for overlapping it la is necessary in cutting the new I 1 ning rind to all v for overlapping for the reidon that tl ti e rivet holes at va tl s point are very close to tl ti e 6 ede end and to leave tl e lining sl ort I 1 ere would allow it to tear when hen the holes are drilled see fig I 1 tor for the mett od of determining deter miring the correct lengal if the old lining can be removed intact it can be used as a gide calde in obtaining tl 0 e new measurements As ti 11 e aver ige arl ate g inge generally Cene rally lacals lad s the tools used in alis tl is work at service ice stations u b n pier meal 4 have to be emr loved in markin tl ti e lining for the holes lay tt t e w N I 1 eel on tl ti e bench i r floor hub side dou down n and put tl it e lining and band hi place on the d un us shown in rig 2 wire the band so as to bold it in place c directly with a pencil or coap capstone stone stick and using the holes in the band tor for it template mark the lining A harness leather ach Is used in making the holes secure the lining to the band in its proper position with the aid of a few small bolts and nuts nest next counter sink the I 1 oles so zo the civit heads will be below the surface of the lining A counter 1 aking tool made for this purpose produces the most satis fac tory results but it one Is not a avail vall able one can get go d results from a wood ere acre i v coun counters king tool and a brace if the latter is used it should be sharp oi 01 tl it e lining will tear should have vise if you do not possess a vise place tl e band on the ench in such a nay v ay as to prevent it from slipping away and with alth the countersink bit counter sink cad hole DC not go too deep n this operation orly or ly enough to al at I 1 w the rh rhet et heads to be well below the am in ng surface unless there are two people one hold boldn ni the band ml in I 1 rivet bar while I 1 e the other Is asit g the hammer it Is almost to get along with out a vise rig 4 shows a way of using an old bolt I 1 eld in a vise with the head V f the bolt resting on tl ti e arm of the vise ise to give solid foundation insert a rivet tl ti rough the lining and tie tl e band and with the vie whole in place as in rig il 4 tl it e head of the rivet rest ing on tl ti e bolt draw the rivet snug ug with i ith a rin rivet et set t r a short piece of gas pipe A few blows vill be enough to draw the rivet head and the lin ng rig tight and in place avoid too much pounding aa as it will tend to draw the rivet deeper in the material and possibly weaken to the point of breaking through it may be found that rivets are too longor too short not more than three sixteenths of an inch should protrude through the band in rivet ing these ends use quick light blows F g 3 counters ng the hole holes in the brake band as heavy ones will draw the rivet I 1 ead in the I 1 ning too tight this operation Is performed with the brake in the same position as N vlen I 1 en us ng the rivet set do not remove the bolts that were nere used as temporary lol I 1 dings until the holes not occupied by bolts have been filled with rivets tl TI Is completes the foot brake and the same methods are used in relining rell ning the internal or hand brake for internal brakes with the exception of the marking of the holes the methods just described are applicable to the inte internal anal brake it Is not necessary to put the shoe in place with the lining as with the external band when the th lining has been cut making the same allow ance for the ends as was nas given in rne th foot brake in irk and attach this end with bolts in its proper place on the shoe after stretching the band over abb shoe mark and punch the holes are opposite the split in the band do tl e sime ime with tl e last two hole and complete tt tie e temporary attach ment the riveting follows the same amt az kufs 14 it fig 4 how to use an old bolt and a piece of pipe as a R vet set course as in the foot brake re ile place the bral es being careful to secure every part in its proper post tion it nill 11 be necessary to make a complete readjustment before put ting on the wl eels clean the bearings hearings and pack them in fresh grease much brake troubie trouble is caused by the leak ing of grease into the brake a eel an ism in older to remedy this for t u time at least cut a thick strip of felt long en ugh to be wrapped around tt 11 e axle bar three or four times the felt should be of sufi aclei t thickness to fit snugly between the bar and tl e housing wl en v v rapped around the shaft |
