Show WI TO LOSE C A determined effort Is being made to divert travel from froin the arrowhead trail at nepha and have it go through sevier and sanpete count counties les more than that the proposal is to make this the primary route instead of the present arrowhead trail representatives of the richfield salina and monroe commercial clubs accompanied by the sevier county commissioners met with chairman N X C poulson of the state road corn com mission a few days ago and proposed that the states primary highway running from north to south be diverted at nepal and be continued through salt creek canyon and extending gouth south through sevier and sanpete counties where it would serve larger populations than would the arrowhead trail the route they propose to follow would extend from to fountain green moroni chester ephraim Ephr alm mantl marti sterling gunnison Gunn lson center field axtell redmond salina aurora vermillion sigurd venice richfield central elsinore Els lnore nibley joseph cove pittsburg marysvale Marys larys vale alunite junction circleville Cir cleville pang and so on through the state reaching the grand canyon of the colorado braces canyon zion national park cedar breaks and aud other scenic pointe points tie the arrowhead trail la Is miles shorter than the proposed new route added to which the new route would have two summits to cross which are almost impassable in winter and sometimes totally impassable the claim is made that these summits have easy grades but that does not alter weather conditions in winter our greatest claim tor for the arrowhead trail Is s that it is an all year route a route that can be traveled in winter as well as in summer it is conceded to be shorter by twenty five miles than the proposed new route and Is the logical direct route from salt lake city to southern california those pulling for the naw new route are powerful and numerous added to which the chairman of the state road commission mr poulson comes from richfield if it we mistake not we of dixie know what the arrowhead trail means to us the travel on it the past year has brought considerable money into the county we know of nothing else than has brought so much money to us year can we afford to lose this certainly not without making a big effort to retain it if it the eastern route is decided on as the states primary north and south road we certainly will lose considerable sid erable of this travel there will then be no all year route to california without travel on a secondary road money will be expended on the primary road which will be kept in tiptop tip top shape while the secondary road will suffer the proposed new now primary road I 1 ends edds nowhere so tar far as interstate travel is concerned it ends at the grand canyon which la to a barrier to further travel in that direction while the arrowhead trail Is a direct route from salt lake to the arizona border and thence to the coast should the wishes of the sevier and sanpete delegations be granted we vie firmly believe it will eventually kill the arrowhead trail as a winter route when tourists find that they have to make a longer tour and cross two tuo summits that are forbidding in winter they will select some other route to the coast A big effort should be made by all the towns along the arrowhead trail to avert this threatened calamity we may told our bands hands and say it Is not reasonable to suppose that the state would sacrifice such a direct and logical route tor for another by taking such comfort we are dece iving ourselves and may aay awake to find that the enemy has stolen a march on us and we have lost out better get busy right now and do what we can to prevent such a possibility every person of influence every commercial club every county and civic officer along the arrowhead trail should be alive to the threaten cd ed danger and working to the utmost 0 0 o ward WON it t og |
