Show colon COIL carnies LIGHT GALLON or OIL TO THE tp utah cannel coal and its value as an oil producer Is discussed in an in report of the united states bureau of mines C A alien chief mine inspector tor the industrial commission of utah author bt the report states that in 1920 he inspected the field near mount camel and secured a large sample ol 01 the cannel coal which as tested at the inter mountain mount aln experiment station of the united states bureau of mines at salt lake city with the following results gallons of oil per ton 68 8 specific gravity of the oil setting point 36 degrees centigrade per cent ash in the coal 22 2 per cent nitrogen I 1 30 although the coal was examined in 1907 it was not until 1913 or 1917 that the first test or oil was made by dean B winchester and his report bulletin U S geol survey gave seventy gallons ol 01 oil and pounds of ammonium sulphate to the ton in discussing this cannel deposit mr alien sets forth the following facts the increasing activity in oil shale has had a tendency to direct the attention of the industry to any substance from which gasoline or other oils can be secured cannel coal tor many years has been known as a source of oil and formerly it was the only substance from which kerosene was obtained the name of coal oil was given to kerosene because it was derived from cannel coal before any flowing wells were brought in in the united states in an isolated region in southern utah there is an unusually thick and clean bed of cannel coal which laboratory experiments indicate can be made to yield about seventy gallons ol 01 oil to the ton this coal was first described in bulletin of the united states geological survey under the title 0 calob coal field this field lies at the western and southern base of the calob plateau and extends from the town of cedar city southward to Ka narra and then southeastward to the town of mount carmel cedar city Is thirty five miles south of east from lund on the los angeles salt lake rail road which Is the nearest railroad point mount carmel Is about ninety allea south ol 01 marysvale Marys vale on the denver rio grande railroad which Is the nearest roal road point from the eastern end of the field the calob coal occurs la lower cretaceous rocks and a number of wagon mines have been opened on the seam in the vicinity of cedar city and mount carmela but between these places the field has been very prospected the cannel coald BO far Us known at present is limited to a email area on the headwaters of the north fork of the virgin river in townships 39 and 40 south range 9 east in this region it occurs as a bed five and half feet thick over which ites a layer of bituminous coal two feet five inches thick A athla section of the coal was also examined by david white of the survey who gave the following report the fuel contains very little in the way of vestiges of the cell structures of higher plants being made up largely of russet and lemon yellow more or less or globular translucent bodies embedded in a brownish black ground mass of somewhat flocculent aspect some of this translucent matter Is probably resinous while it Is possible that some of the lemon yellow substance less in quantity may be though that Is not at all certain on the whole the composition of the coal Is essentially that of a high grade cannel in appearance the coal other cannel coal resembles bone more than coal it is hard and breaks with a conc holdal fracture slivers of the coal may be readily ignited with a match the only disadvantage to the mining of the coal Is its distance from the railroad and the ruggedness of the country the north fork of the virgin river alowa through zion canyon which la feet deep and which on account of Us rugged scenery was recently made a nation at park the coal lies on the plateau above the canyon and this plateaux ui or bench is intersected by several deep ravines the entire coultry Is also densely covered with oak brush which makes traveling even on bobae back very the coal can be reached by a poor wagon load from mount carmel but a new road over the calob plateau ta being built cedar city which will give it from that point salt lake tribune bert covington and Slier mati lamb returned yesterday from salt laka city they about two delss |
