Show WOOD MATTER UK 1113 A TO OF OV INTERIOR judge D 11 morris took up the tile matter of the forbidding of sout southern heln utah people to haul firewood from iron tho the arizona strip with governor campbell and the following letters 1 show the status of the case september ath 1920 lion ilon john barton payne secy of the interior washington D C As explanatory ot of the request I 1 am making of the department of the interior there are herewith enclosed copies of letters from hon simon bamberger governor of utah and mr air D 11 II morris salt lake city utah relative to conditions existing in a section of that state this matter was officially called to my attention during a meeting of the league of the southwest of which I 1 am the president held in denver the of last month during a recent trip to that part pt of arizona called the arizona strip and through portions of utah I 1 became conversant with conditions there and have no hesitation in endorsing the request ot of these people tor for permission to use the fallen timbers in the northern part of the state for fuel and other purposes As is well pointed out in the letter of I 1 A mr ir morris the fallen timber is serving no useful purpose at the present time and will eventually rot away and become of no use whatever naturally such permission as Is desired should be safeguarded but I 1 know that proper regulations could be put into effect which would insure that no damage would be done on the other hand a great benefit would accrue to the people and the interests of the public domain would not in any way suffer trusting that your department can sea see its way clear to grant the lege I 1 remain with assurances of my high esteem sincerely yours J al M campbell governor of arizona executive office phoenix arizona september ath my aly dear mr air mortis morris your letter to governor bamberger regarding the ue of fallen timber on public lands in the state of arizona was referred to me by him and I 1 have taken the matter matte rup up with the secretary of the interior and hope to secure the permission that you and other citizens of your state desire for your information I 1 am enclosing copy of the letter to honorable john darton barton payne so that you may know the steps I 1 have taken and can acquaint the people of your vicinity with the fact that I 1 am doing everything I 1 possibly can in their behalf upon i of a reply which I 1 anticipate will be favorable I 1 will be pleased to report to ou the context thereof I 1 appreciate very much the call you made upon me while journeying through your section and trust that an opportunity will be soon afforded to renew the pleasant acquaintance formed on that occasion it if I 1 can ba be of further service in any other matter which effects the welfare of yourself yo and the other people of your section kindly feel free to command me with kind personal regards I 1 remain sincerely yours J al campbell Campb sll governor ot of arizona |
