Show TO SUGARLOAF citizens respond loyally to call of commercial club and donate the labor Freely Ladies help the call of the st george commercial club for volunteers to build a road to the sugarloaf Sugar loaf met with a hearty response last Saturday the day was partly observed as a holiday some of the stores closing entirely while those that did not close had men at work the managers themselves also turning out it was one big day the men all worked well indeed they could not have worked better had they been getting pay for it men between 70 and 80 worked beside boys of 15 and 16 and worked well too their example was emulated by the younger ones who admired the grit and ability of the veterans who kept to the work with the younger ones their own under direction of john H cot tain the commercial club chairman on roads the men were strung out along the road where they would be of the most use some plowing some building bridges some scraping others getting out rock and still others with pick and shovel getting out and loading dirt and rock for nils capping materials and a few were drilling and blasting rock out of the road shortly after noon the call for lunch was given and the workers adjourned to the spacious lawn of mr and mrs geo brooks sr on mount hope where preparations for the meal bad been made the relief society bisters of both wards had very kindly taken this in hand and were very ably assisted by a number of ladles and girls who saw to it that each and every individual present was well looked after clean linen claths cloths had been laid on the lawn and on these was spread a bounteous feast fit for kings the ladles of the city who furnished the meal were inwardly thanked by those who partook of it tor it was good indeed there was cooked food in great variety chicken beef cheese pickles delicious sandwiches pork and beans delicious cake of several kinds and several other good things which we do not remember and it was well served too paper tumblers plates spoons napkins etc being furnished one hundred and sixty men and boys with good healthy appetites set to with a will to dispose of all thesa good things but they did not sue aeed tor after the meal was over there was sufficient left to have fed halt as many again so in mid after noon a number of the young ladles walked along the road carrying baskets of sandwiches water etc to the workers some of whom showed that they had again worked up an appetite by lessening the load the ladles carried after the meal was finished W 0 bentley jr the chairman of the commercial club made a neat little speech of thanks to the ladies for furnishing the splendid meal and called for vote of thanks the re epoise was so hearty and vigorous as to almost shake the hills and the ladles surely deserved it work was resumed on the road and continued till about rpm dy that time a very good road had been made including two bridges and a new canal some distance for the cot conwood water the road Is wide enough all through tor two cars to pass each other safely Twenty two teams with their drivers and single hands turned out to do this work voluntarily after the men quit co agent J R tippetts went over the road in his car managing to go over the entire road to the sugarloaf Sugar loaf except on one small sandy stretch where beveral helped to shove the car through the surfacing was not quite finish ed when work ceased tor the day forked resumed aonda Twenty two men and six yearns volunteered to work monday to finish the road six of these men are over 65 years old vl william gardner william brigham jarels geo T colam steven bunker and joseph lee some of the others are over 60 years old they put in a splendid days work and put the the road in fine condition after if was finished the editor was taken over it by john H cottam in his car which easily made the run to the top of the bill the soft parts of the road having had a good coat of top dressing applied good material has been used on the road for surfacing a shale that will wear well it is estimated that the value of the work done on the road Is between eoven and eight hundred dollars all freely dona tedi it Is such work as this bat puts a place on the map it Is progress of the right kind no one who took any part in it will regret having given a day or two of their time tor the public benefit on the contrary they will congratulate themselves they have made it possible for tourists to reach a point in their cars where a view ol 01 the may obtained with ease and comfort om fort I 1 where formerly ahey had to the steep hills fighting their wa through mesquite and other brush tourists will delight in going on the sugar loaf to watch the transformation made in the scenery at sunset the wonderful play of color on the hurricane fault and other cliffs from yellow to lUon fiery red deeper shades of red and finally a rich dark purple it Is beautiful beyond description and it is right and proper that this magnificent ant view should be opened up and made easily of access to everybody besides the tourists it will become a great gathering place tor recreation by our own citizens A big am pl theatre Is already there where with a little work natural seating for a very large number of people can be arranged and operas theaters concerts and other open air amusements given we look on the opening up to autos of this choice spot as a big thing for st george the value of which i will be increased as it ia brought into use it is good work and we are proud of the good spirit with which om citizens went into if with such a spirit kept alive there Is no end to the good that may be accomplished |
