taking an inventory of ourselves there is a future for every one of us there is much unfinished work to do we receive the spirit of the lord in no way so go much as in our public gatherings the principle of obedience stands in jeopardy in all the world today a spirit of lawlessness Is everywhere that is why bolshevism and other jams are so prevalent made mention of the wild political desires of certain classes ot at labor wishing to do away with law and order it if successful at the polls made alade a state ment of the good morale morals of the mormon boys and their splendid obedience to authority they being much sought after by army officers and others this trait of character is a great blessing to us all the rule of the church is one of love and persuasion we should rule our children in this manner only we must not injure our children by harsh measures but must appeal to their intelligence when we are mistaken we jaust make amends not only fathers and mothers but officers of the church when mistaken must make amends this is the spirit ol 01 our leaders the kaiser was the exact opposite of this the life of the mas 6 tor tar was one ot of humility love and persuasion never was he vain ot of autocratic but at all times godlike contrasted the christians as made by constantine Constant lne and those by jesus showing the great difference in serva ice gave an account ot of the martyrdom of joseph smith and told of his Ws unselfishness those following were like him there being no selfishness at all in any of them they at all timea times stand by the people and will not desert them the success of the church is 1 linked up with the soil we must stick to the land we must stick to our bishops and stake presidents and not be led away we must follow the living leaders we have now come to the hour when we must grow spiritually as a church s we must be obedient to authority and stay with the majority of the councils in church government those who set up their judgment against the leaders fall and go down the path of safety Is obedience told ot at his call to the apostleship and of his mother being told of the lord b by y the spirit that she should become departed dead prof earl J bleak and clair clair gates gave a cornet duet the roa roo bryt elder ballard made a quotation from the doctrine and covenants concerning those that died in the lord it is better to go to the house ot of mourning than to go to the house of prayer stated the brethren had sent their love and blessing to those bereaved no man or woman who does good ever dies thousands are blessed by theli example spoke of the flu visitations a year ago and the recent ono on baying saying till these visitations are tor for a purpose and our good and benefit gave aa an account of the great death rate in oregon and elsewhere in this great calamity a lesson Is to be learned many arc are relying on the great wisdom of those skilled in medicine and sanitation leaving the power of god out of the question altogether and are baff baffled led in their eff efforts orts so it Is in all science tence sc made mention of the fate of the titanic as an ail illustration we are today helpless in the presence of the scourges urges of god made quotation from the doctrine and coven ants in support of this told of hie his praying to god to know why children and good mothers were taken in death by these scourges urges and was told that these were the judgments of god these things shall not cease until the lord comes unless we repent read from the ath sec see of doctrine and covenants in support of this zion shall escape if we keep all these commandments many L D 8 are not doing as they should no man or woman who keeps the commandments of god shall perish unnecessarily many of these good men and women are needed on the other side to work with those who know not god and of the works of god the lord has tried to make us immune from these scourges urges by the word of wisdom the adversary is trying to wreck our faith this is a day ot of trial we will be immune it we keep the commandments being clean and pure I 1 famine shall corns come but god G ad will teed feed you and protect you elder john T woodbury jr read a resolution from the stake board of education and D N X C faculty in honor of at principal romney as follow follows resolution of respect the stake board of at education and the faculty of the dixie normal college in the deepest sympathy and with most mellow feelings tender this resolution of respect to the family and loved ones of our beloved president erastus snow romney whom the lord has called away whereas brother romney was a loyal active citizen in our community and in our country a faithful stalwart member of our church a fourth NO quarterly conference st george stake or zion continued from first page dutiful and loving son of a wonderful mother a kind and tender bua band and father of an ideal family and whereas our lamented brother was always aggressively fighting evil wherever it showed its vicious head was ever willing to bear the brunt ol 01 the opposition of needed moral reforms was anxious to carry his share of the responsibility of bringing to fruition any worthy movement moral or physical and was yet withal consciously striving to make all who knew him his friends by thinking and acting in terms of their welfare but never by the sacrifice of his principles and whereas president romney was inspirational and refreshing in or ordinary contact with his fellows and doubly so in conducting his classes and in the administration of our school almost invariably being able to get a recalcitrant or lawbreaking student to attach his punishment to his offense rather than to our institution or its administrators and whereas our president was al ways considerate fair minded and democratic in his relationships with the faculty and students always securing the good will and unity of the teachers and by tar the best freest and most successful student body government our school has ever con ducted and whereas an extraordinary balth in the resources of our dixie and a bright optimism for the development of them a hope soon to see our city a city beautiful a city with good fences paved sidewalks well kept shade trees smoothly graded streets beautiful lawns and flower gardens clean yards modern houses a pure water supply a sewer system a drainage system a pleasant park and above all a moral tone above reproach characterized our departed fellow citizen and whereas our friend had a tarm belief jn the efficacy of right aduca alon to produce safe sane citizens who can be relied on in times of crisis to keep their equilibrium and preserve order until a birth of new order rather than an abortion in the form of chaos take place and whereas president romney was a man of great importance to us in many departments of life as principal of our school as a man of more than statewide state wide renown as an educator and teacher as an idealist in the moral realm as a practical leader in any kind of project physical or moral as a worker in most of our organizations as a well informed well trained well rounded out citizen of our city and worthy exemplary efficient member of our church we feel bis loss very keenly and extend our heartfelt heart felt sympathy to his loved ones who must feel his loss to be nigh overwhelming our hearts go out in mute con dorence to bis wife to his mother to his dear little family and to all of those who are bereaved by his loss as did the love of job s friends la the time of his great affliction we recommend the virtues of our departed brother to all they are worthy of emulation especially do we recommend them to his dear little children who inherit part of his nature and should glory in his achievements As a token of our love and respect we shall endeavor to carry out many of the ideals that president romney had it in bis heart to carry out bad he lived to do so we remind the loved ones of our esteemed brother that life is short extremely short when compared with eternity that though they are tor the present deprived of bis companionship ion ship they shall be his and be shall be theirs throughout the count jess ages of the eternal world chorus sang unanswered yet and benediction was pronounced by bishop james mcarthur sunday forenoon there was a large attendance at this session 0 conference which included the sunday school children the total number present being after singing prayer and exercises connected with the sunday school work elder ballard spoke he made mention of the great significance of the sacrament and the promises we make when baptis ed and wondered how many bad sinned since baptism told of the catholic system of confession where members seek forgiveness for sin when we commit sin we must make restitution before we are forgiven after the doing of right we then should come to the sacrament table with clean hands and pure hearts and make new covenants when we commit sin we lose the spirit we must not touch tea coffee etc nor should we absent ourselves sunday school and become darkened in spirit we must control the body spiritual food Is contained in tho sacrament which builds us and re news us spiritually and makes us able and strong we are in need of this food every sunday there Is no ceremony in the church eo sacred as the partaking ot the sacrament told oa how we love the things we make great sacrifice for gave an account of the great cost of the in ution ot the sacrament god s gift of his son tor the sins ot the world also told ot abraham s great faith in being willing to sacrifice his son isaac the lord s love tor his son jesus was tar greater than that ot abraham tor isaac though god had the power to save his eon he made the sacrifice tor our sake ou the one hand love or his son on the other hand love for ua the day will come when we must meet many will be found like the foolish virgins without oil in their lamps through sin and negligence singing 0 it Is wonderful benediction by pres edw H snow bunida afternoon alter singing and prayer the 1 names of the general and local church authorities were presented for the sustaining vote of the conference all were unanimously sustained free stated that this waa one 0 the best ye had ever had here and be hoped all getting good out of it referred to the previous instructions of president snow regarding the plant ing of more fruit trees vines etc asked how many had heeded these instructions a good response was made by a show of hands and the people were commended for this good spirit of obedience there Is nothing so valuable as the spirit of obedience said the speaker we should do our utmost to assist the communities in which we live and in beautifying our homes and surroundings gave an account of the present industrial conditions of the county operatives doing much less work than formerly exhorted all to produce as much as possible pres snow said all would be blessed it they carried out the instructions given from time to time we should all emulate bro whitehead s industry and economy had been touched by the spirit of this conference we need now above all spiritual strength and courage to stand for that which is right we need to go back to that humble and simple life of our fathers we should not worship the dollar the clean boys and girls that bear our names should be of greater value to us than money and lands there are a large number of young men among us who have utterly neglected to pay their tithing their families are enjoying the blessings of our organizations we will regret it it we do not plant more fruit trees and vines made mention of the good work being done by the farm bureau in this county all the towns should be ambitious for a good water system we want to make beautiful towns these are the fundamental element la civic improvement we should be true to governmental institutional those of america which were inspired of god elder ballard sang 1 I know that my redeemer lives stated that be felt sure all had enjoyed this conference for the spirit of the lord had been with us we are to live so as to increase our spirituality we must pay the price of salvation we must be a unit in this institution of the lord unless we are careful we shall not be aware of the time in which we live we are living in the day of redemption of the lord the lord has made many promises of work to be |
