Show mrs margaret burgess dixie pioneer passes mrs margaret mcintire burgess died at her home in this city dec 17 1919 of heart failure following a long siege of rheumatism which bad had confined her to her bed for nearly six years she was lorn born in wheatfield township indiana county pennsylvania on may 22 1837 a daughter ot of mr and mrs william mcintire her parents were converted to the L D 8 religion and baptised baptized sed by elder erastus snow and shortly after moved to nauvoo here they were very intimate with the prophet joseph smith who was a frequent visitor at the mcintire home they left nauvoo in may 1846 when the saints were expelled and crossed the mississippi river staying for or some time with tour four other families in a wooded ravine near a indian village the indians proving good and kind neighbors the next spring they moved to winter quarters later florence and stayed there until president brigham young and company started for the rocky mountains after pros pres young left the mcintire family moved to kanes ville in 1849 they started for salt lake in a company consisting of 0 wagons under captain orson spencer the company afterwards being divided in two under captains william miller and orson hyde they had some trouble with pawnee indians and contracted cholera from them five of the company dying of it the mcintire family had three wagons one of which was driven by margaret who was then only 12 years old her brother 14 years old had to help drive the cattle on arriving in utah the family settled at salt lake city in the spring of 1856 1855 margaret was married in the endowment house to melanchton burgess a pioneer to utah burgess was a blacksmith and one of the most ful in the community he lie made horseshoe nails and other very necessary articles for the settlers from iron ore brought to him from near cedar city in the fall of 1861 she with her husband two children and her parents were called to the dixie mission and were among the first settlers of st george mrs burgess was the mother of five children two of whom are living miss margaret and mrs jennie B miles both of this city she is also tury lied by been grandchildren four great grandchildren and one brother rutx joseph seph 11 mcintire of ogden utan one of her grandsons D irving burgess of idaho falls idaho served in the infantry division in the late war was badly wounded and gassed funeral services were held in the st george stake tabernacle on 19 thursday dec 18 the stand was appropriately decorated and the esteem in which deceased was held hold was manifest in the profusion of flowers that covered the top of the casket the speakers elders brigham jarvis A N winsor and thomas P cottam eulogized the noble life and work of the departed sister the musical numbers both vocal and instrumental were beautifully rendered sister burgess was a kind and 4 1 patient woman a most devoted ve i mother and a devout latter day saint during the theeart jears ears of her illness she bore her suffering with 4 great fortitude and never complained t the remains were laid by the side of her loved obes in the city aeme tary av |
