| Show enlist go to college many a 1918 high school graduate Is debating with himself this year shall 1 go to college or shall I 1 enlist at once tor military serviced 9 tha war department baa just made it possible to do it says in effect to the am bilious young american you serve your country by going to college to make cure that you do not lose there by the opportunity ot serving your country in a direct military capacity you will be asked to join the special U S army college training units that are to be formed you will be liable tor service r at a moment s notice but because you aro worth more to the nation with your college training than without it you will be expected to stay in college called by the government the war department s announcement provides that beginning with september 1918 military instruction under officers and non commissioned officers of the army will be provided in every institution of college grade enrolling for the instruction st one hundred or more able bodied students over the age of eighteen the necessary military equipment will be b alie government there will be created a military draining unit in each institution ution enlistment will be voluntary but all students avei the age of eighteen will be encouraged to enlist the enlistment will constitute the student a member of the army of the united states liable to active duty at the call of the prest dent it will however be the policy of the government not to call the members of the age ot twenty one unless urgent necessity compels an earlier call students under eighteen and therefore not legally eligible for enlistment will be encouraged to enroll in the train ing units provision will be made tor coordinating the reserve officers training corps system which exists in about one third of the collegiate institutions with this broader plan this new policy alms to accomplish a two told object the ar department part ment announces first to develop as a great military outset the large body ot young men in the colleges and second to prevent annec essary and wasteful depletion of the colleges through indiscriminate volunteering ering by offering to the a definite and immediate status no nation has made such generous provision tor combined military and college education as has the united states in this new plan the youth who avail themselves ot the ge will be serving their country immediate a well as future needs |
