Show dramas by ath and ath grades very good the sixth and seventh grades of the woodward school have been working for edme time on drama ench which were presented at the opera house last saturday night the sixth grade drama is entitled asleep at his post and was original being made up by the students from s etory the play deals with the time of the civil war S il diers are shown arriving in camp after a long tiresome march one of them has carried the kit of another over whom he promised the mother to watch and volunteers to do sentry duty for him he falls asleep at his post is discovered and sentenced to be shot his sister goes to president lincoln the circumstances and is granted a pardon for her brother the final scene shows the happy reunion of the family and a visit from aby lincoln to the family those taking part were lincoln lillian Mc mr owen of the the south clarence mrs owen grace gates beluie owen gertrude mcgregor blossom olive snow barbari alien beatrice mc mr alien rulon bleak jimmie carr grant harris maid rose aasby mammy mary colonel howard miller soldiers weslie pearce arnold thorn pon teddy ranee and gray fullerton patriotism the drama given by the seventh grade was also original it opens just before the revolutionary war and finishes ju at tei the war A young man decides to join the revolution reo lution and is forbidden to go the home of his sweethearts father who comes out strongly for king george the play is a strong one and events succeed that finally bring all herin happi and for the new nation those taking part lord van horn vern miles frederick van horn louis christian mildred van horn helen miles ewan garack jay pearce george washington bert fawcett martna washington anna miles black mammy daunno whipple general howe van brey lords henry crosby and harold cannon ladies blanche mathis rachael gramand mary defrieze mr brown archie wallis soldiers butler and negroes other members of the grade the opera was crowded and the young thespians were heartily applauded as they deserved to be for their parta were exceptionally well taken both grades and the pida went through without the elieh test hesitation or prompting anery word VM darly beard and it was evident that they had been well coached A matinee was given friday afternoon which was also crowed be tween fifty and sixty dollars was cleared above expenses which is to help the school library the school orchestra was loudly applauded for their good work and they richly it the colonial dresa worn by girls and hoys in patriotism were realistic and gave reality to the scene the dancing of tha minuet which wai very gracefully done em phasing this unfortunately the electric lighta went out of commission while patriotism was being staged and poor lighting spoilt the effectiveness of this scene to some extent the dancing of the virginia reel by the darkies was immense and exceedingly well done our boys and girls surely did well and deserve encouragement not only for the good plays they so well ed but also for the writing of the there is some talk of liking the plays over to santa clara but owing to unsettled weather this is doubtful |
