Show glorious scenery of the grand canyon dr frederick vining fisher the noted lecturer his photographer mr Ft helbert bingham NA arren cox with his studebaker six car and the editor formed a party that lett left thia this city tuesday morning the mat tor for the purpose pur polke of ing the grand canyon near mount trumbull from the edge of the plateau at the mouth of lower tu deap canyon our nay lay through harrisburg Harns burg 14 miles from st george as shown bv by the aeed ometer I 1 eeds 15 miles andersons ranch 22 miles here the party was treated to watermelon musk melon and grapes from the fine farm of peter anderson d sons by B F anderson An deison after which the route was continued through erville where the new cannery was in operation to roL la verkin aVerkin 31 simile mile to hurricane 33 miles here a stop was made for dinner the journey thus far had not been pro vitious as we hid bad twice had a tire punctured and one blowout how ever we had no further trouble on that score until we left jacob s lake on oil the alabab plateau behind us ug on our return when we ran onto a small nail which caused a puncture the studebaker car did splendidly under mr cox s guidance and the traveling was certainly very pleasant all through leaving hurricane the car went it s way up the fine road to the top of the hurricane fault many fine view of the pretty little awn t awn of hurricane and the little farms and fields laid out like a prettily color ed checkerboard opening up to view in passing several pictures were taken along here by mr bingham from the foot of hurricane hill to antelope are several stretches where the road is not all that could be desired for auto travel still autos travel it frequently and get through alright ae e made camp at antelope the first night there is good water here the distance irom st geirge gerge ras as shown is ti 01 S 8 miles and the altitude feet mi ill cox had two aneroid barometers with him to check up the altitudes and both agreed where elevations are here agn gien en at the camp were thomas isom and son irvin ako also thomas stratton who were on their ray ft ay home to hurricane with lumber from the sawmill on mount trum bull they had bad several cottontail rabbits more than they could ue bibich they had ahot shot and which they handed over to 0 our r party and they made a delici m supper fried just right by mr cox who is an old hand it the game thirteen miles from antelope the road forks here we took the road bearing to the right claybolt clayhole Clay hole bole wash n ash 78 miles altitude feet took road to left at forks of road 92 miles out near cutler pockets there is a small monument built of rocks denoting the forks of road here the road forks again 4 of a mile further on take load joad to right wash was entered at 97 miles the altitude feet the road is fairly good down canyon to the lower reservoir 1145 5 miles and here we made camp wed lasday afternoon for the night go ing on to the brink of the inner gorge after leaving the car at the reservoir the brink of the gorge is 1 5 miles from the re senoir or miles from st george by the road toad we came there is another road which lessons this distance di considerably but at present is in no cn for auto travel it is impossible for us to de en cri ie le tl tie e awful majesty of the scenery at this point the inner gorge of the U canyon at 04 tumah cap it is 13 said aid to be A the deepest part of the great chasm and becan we can fully belle believe veit it the first impression is a decad I 1 shod shoe one walks alks to the brink ai d looks down to a depth of more t ian feet into the river below we gazed in awe for a moment then the immen sity of the thing began to dawn dann up on we felt how small we was how great the nork ork before us e fe bean an to feel uncertain and had to lay down with our head over the brink and try to how it all came about foi for o over oer er 2000 feet the wall appeared to go straight down then there was ras a slight break A which did not appear to dispel the impression that it wa a sheer drop into the river from tho the brink upon which we stood th river appe n u ed below to be about the width of an ordinary irrigation irn irrig gatio atio i ditch and looked as though one could easily jump across it yet it is said to be fully feet across at the places within our view where it appeared to be the widest at places where the walls narrowed narro ned we knew there were rapids ind and the glasses showed this to be so yet they could not be told by the naked eye the river appeared to be a streak of silver in some lights yet the glasses showed it to toa a be very muddy stream hile we knew that the rapids were great the water boiling fuming and fus sing in big waves impatient of their confinement to the narrowed chan nel and struggling to get on while we knew all this and that there R was as a terrible roaring and commotion going on yet we listened in vain for the great sounds that should accod pany the spectacle all we could hear by intent listening was i t sub dued murmur more like a gentle wind through trees than a mighty stream tream broken into cataracts we echi ecu d see a great distance up and down stream tream by moving a little but unfortunately the light was not the best there was a haze baze indian summer which spoilt distant views viers of rim mr bingham secured many excellent view that evening and the next day both up and down the river which will be used at some gorne future dav by mr fisher in his great work of bringing america before the horld such sueh scenery cannot be duplicated ana an ft here else elbe on earth and thousands of tourists will want rant to see it when they are fully informed of it and trivel travel is made easy for them see america first fisher haf har ns ris great slogan will ill not die and the day is not far distant when the cry of touristy 6 will be so insistent insl insi stant for good roads that the tha will i e heeded and this part of our own OAR america which contains the most wonderful grand and sublime scenery on earth will be opened to them for quick and comfortable comac ratable travel the distance across the inner gorge was estimated by our party as anywhere between or 01 e half mile and a mile yet it may be more than this last distance distances are so de cestive in this region tl ti at it is irn im p sible to be sure of any by vision alone the distance across the outer nm rim was judged to be about six miles but may be much more beautiful temples etc as seen geen f fr rm im canoua parts of the are not seen at this point yet the inner gorge here with its greater depth e isy access etc should be seen by the tourist there is said to be a trail leading down to the river from a some where near our which can be made quite afe and fairly easy with a little work but when we re learned that it would lake take a full d y to go down it and return we did not lok for it as our time was limited to anyone contemplating a trip to the grand cany banyn in w wr would like to say ta time and do it I 1 I 1 t thoroughly at t the very least leat we w would I 1 ae ane wished t pend a week at the and mount trumbull portion the longer one stays stay the more fascinating the scenery be comes there are fine springs oi of good water on mount trumbull al at a point not far from canyon and the immense pine forest on mount trumbull is well worth go ing through so we were informed the beauty ot of the rocky cliffa and canyon walls the coloring which changes nith each hour of the day never seeming to present twice ex acely the same appearance all in dacate that time should be spent in the vicinity to thoroughly enoy enjoy the marvellous marcellous marv ellous spectacle we set the speed ameter to zero and reluctantly left camp at 5 p in thursday thu aday and made a run of 12 miles up canyon to reservoir where we made camp for the night at 6 30 p in making beda beds of wild sunflowers which were very comfortable and which we hated to leave in the cool crisp an all friday morning after a good warm breakfast we left camp at 7 a m and headed across country toward fredonia from which point we intended go ing on to bright angel point on the knaab mr cox the chauffeur of the party had been told that an in auto had been over this thi i road but that did n nc t prepare him for the trouble ahead for he did not know that the auto was driven by mr mccormick of kanab a sheep man mail ft N ho had been inspecting sever al reservoirs along but out of the direct route mr cox faithfully followed the auto tracks made by mr mccormick and of course had to turn back when R we e came to these reservoirs and foun i no road be yond many miles and much time was thus lost but this was wag deducted and the log as given here may I 1 1 e taken as fairly accurate let us say however that this is n auto rad an auto can go over it but careful driving is required mr cox handled big studebaker aix IX ex cellen lly and it seemed he could take it almost anywhere he wished during these times when we thought we were following the route taken by the auto afre aforementioned mentioned but when n no trace ot of a track could be seen owing to the nature ot of the ground fin finally illy landi landing rig at some rei and having to return on our tracks we jokingly said what we do if ever we ave came across the man mail who unwittingly lead us on this wild goose chase but when we re di I 1 meet him at fredonia we all enjoyed a hearty laugh oter it after leaving camp at reservoir resser voir re e f cloned the road to a point 18 miles from lower loner reservoir hera here the md f arks the load to the right which we took is very indistinct so we built a small moi ament of rocks at the f irks as a gui IP ie at 29 8 miles is the findlay reservoir large and good water f fhe he road goes round by the right of the reservoir through a badly washed canyon where the worst part of the road on the trip was encountered continued on to I 1 ittle hurricane hill 40 9 miles here n we e met senator W W beeg eeg millar and arid W H mace ot of who had been out to one of the canyons looking alter after son e hordes they were breeding at 52 mile we re crossed wash the water ot of which is alka lied at 55 4 miles we entered the moccasin in llan lian reservation thence aar ss on a fairly good load to fredonia 67 4 miles from lower reservoir here we camped for the night ve vve left fredonia at 6 30 a in and traveled over a good road climb ing steadily after a few miles thrush a t rest rea of pinion pine and large cedar which changed to yellow pine and fir which we lye continued in n through until we reached jacobs lake on the kebab plateau chere we bidal bi eal fasted distance from f rom fre donia 29 2 miles altitude feet from here on to bright angel point the nad rad is g od and leads through forest mont of the way exceptions being de adotte park about ten nailes long and two milea wide Plea pleasent ent valley and idd other smaller parks all ill of which are exceed exceedingly inglr beautiful the rich aroma of the pines the exhilarating crispness of the air and the great beauty of the many changing scenes made mad one feel that they wanted to always be there and when we left it was with deep regret we aw many deer who stood at some little distance creatures and watch ed the auto speed by they seemed to know that they were safe that we dare not shoot them we omitted to me that we saw several bands of wild on the desert probably in all w 10 directly direct lv they saw u tok to their heels and continued running ur til out of sight eight we thought they had all been killed off long ago altitudes were taken at several se eral points point along the loute at 37 7 miles from fredonia the altitude is feet 40 5 miles feet 48 8 miles feet we made camp for the night at bright angel camp distant 69 miles from fredonia feet altitude here we found uncle jim owens the famous cougar hunter had his camp uncle jim is 13 a famous char acter said by pres roosevelt to be the last of the great hunters and the greatest eivir g hunter ot of the world today uncle jim took pres Room roosevelt ovelt and chiq hi son kermit out hunting lions a few years ago and they secured five the old hunter Is very proud of a rifle which he showed us made especially to order b aring a gol I 1 plate on the butt in cubed to uncle jim from theo doie roosevelt I 1 uncle jim s I 1 I 1 eat record is lions hons in one year four in one day the largest 11 feet 2 inches from tip to tip pounds weight talking with him hini around the camp fire at night we re learned that his father was irish his moth er scotch and he was wag born 60 60 years veirs ago at san antonio texas he narrated many thrilling experiences of his hl life one of which concerns a yung ung st george man who undoubtedly saved his life uncle jim I 1 had coin oin minered ered a lion in one of the box bo cannot s of the ki he had hd a broken right arm and he and his d gs were mixed up u with the lion lot the old hunter was ras scrapping with his left hand an i the lion was getting the best of the outfit when uncle jim I 1 heard a voice faintly owing to distinct di from the top of the box canyon shouting shall I 1 shoot jim hooted shoot away and tour shots followed each one entering the lion and killing him uncle jim says it was the bese rifle shooting he had bad seen in his lite the dist distance aDee was fully yards and arid the shooter was wag none oth er ertha than boung john al of this city uncle jim was employed for several everal years to hunt bunt cougars he now doe it on his own account he has a herd of 40 buffaloes on buckskin and sells one nally to moving picture con c ans an all I 1 people who want the head a id ii robes he has a herd of filp blood bloodhounds houn is feed them on wild horses and cougar meat and arid ib is very kind to them he is described by his associates an i 1 those acquainted with him as one of the whitest white bt men nien who ever lived and numerous nume rons at a illustrating this are told ot of him he is exceedingly hospitable and a wonderful man for his age biking in aking camp we inide in ide a run out to bright angel point and took a d few pictures komg to the ime point next morning ti to take a fe v more the distance to the point is 71 1 miles and the U S monument gives the altitude as 8 feet it is utterly impossible for us to describe the sublimity of the vie view to be obtained arm either bright angel point or point both of which we visited many others have already described them and most of our readers are familiar with those descriptions from bright angel point one may look across to the opposite plateau and take in the many temples towers rr etc which dot the ground between from bright angel point we siw the train leive leave el tovar at 5 p 1 m S saturday night yet the distance is 15 15 miles it seemed hardly belei vable but a fact nevertheless the hotel at el tovar was seen thru the glass e also the indian gardens halfway down the trail to the river from that point aurthur away was the majestic san francisco mountain in the foreground the most perfect object was shiva s temple from either point or bright an gel point we re saw oza butte minu manu temple budda temple the pyra mid of choops the brahma temple shiva s temple the th tower eTower of ri ra the 0 ans aris temple ous temple angel angels a gate the diva zoraster vishnu solomon s and thor s temples each of the e has a i beauty all its own though the coloring is similar the reds predominating they are all of very large size some thousands of feet high yet at first their size is not apparent ip ap it is only by taking into consideration the immensity of the gorge gurge that some ide idea i can be had of the size of the objects within its walls the panorama irom from any of the points is grand beyond expression and the gran deur of it becomes more express ive lye the longer one stays and views it one may select any one of the great many |
