Show all the year route undoubtedly the best motor west magazine saving one hundred miles in dis tance and permitting automobile travel all tho year around between los angeles and silt lake city are of the many advantages claimed for the latest long di tince highway across western america the roid 19 not new in the way of location for it has been in service these many years but has never been sufficiently improved to permit motor anvel until the enterprising people of dark county nevada recently opened the way to southern utah by constructing a bridge across virgin river at st thomas near the nevada utah state line east of las vagas that was the first real step in the demind for public attention to the shortest route from the pacific boist to the great mineral empire of southeastern neada and southern utah which is destined in the near future to create more interest than any other district of equal area in the united states the map which motor west presents herewith through the courtesy of the harold L arnold touring information bureau was prepared by engineer 0 K parker of los angeles who is thoroughly familiar with the wonderful resources of the region thru which the all year around highway passes this map shows the road following the national old trails from angeles thru san bernardino and victorville Vic torville to barstow and dae gelt there it branches to the northeast and takes a course almost as straight as a crow flies to salt lake city it passes thru silver lake platina las and st thomas nevada then thru the extreme northwest corner of arizona to st george in southern utah continuing northeast it reaches salt lake city by a route which saves over one hundred miles in distance at the sime time traversing a country so equable in temperature as to permit travel at all seasons of the year every other route from the pacific coast to salt lake city attains such altitudes a to be snowbound on the mountain summits during the severe storms of winter which though not of fong duration do interfere considerably with thru travel while the snow remains this difficulty is said not to exist on the road via las vegas and southern utah with public attention called to the advantage of the year around route and the tremendous possibilities of the great mineral zones thru which it parses it 19 highly able that immediate improvement of the roadbed road bed will bp undertaken in fact right now according to engineer parker the entire road can he traveled without any difficulty except at the second crossing of the virgin rier near Lutle held arizona that 19 the only objection at the present time to the use of thia route and expert engineers who have examined the bite af the bridge claim that a permanent structure can be built for and eliat it 13 up to mojave county arizona to furnish the funds for providing provi dine this connecting link on that portion of the route when that is done it is practically illy certain that moat of tha touring to and from southern california will be by way of laa vegas and the year around road dark county nevada is ver much in earnest in putting its portions of this new road in thoroughly good condition and has already so BO improved llie roadbed road bed that fast time can be made from the nevida california line thru las to st thomas this y a long step in the right direction and when san bernardino county s cs its way clear to milroe that in of alie road from barsto thru alyer lake to glatma near the N vad vadi i line the run from los angelee to loa vegas can easily be made in to days As it is now the motorist traveling to las vegas will find a very much better route via the national old trails along the santa fe railroad thru bairstow Bi ludlow bagdad and goffa to the the little railway station at ibis just north of needles there the national old trails road is left and the moton t turns north thru southern i to search light and on to las vegas the distance by that roid from los angeles is miles to las vegas the new route by wa of barstow and silver lake be approximately miles without having any definite measured distance over the new highway it has been said by those who have traveled it to be miles shorter from los angeles to salt lake city than via the owens valley and midland trail thru goldfield and ely nevada part of the road south of salt lake is already a utah state highway and the balance of the road almost the entire distance to the arizona line is thru an agricultural country and is in very fair condition at the present time in fact it would be called a most excellent wagon road and with very little additional dit ional work could be put in shape for faster motor travel entire volumes could be about the scenery along the all year around highway and those who have already been over the road are tremendously enthusiastic over that feature alone take as an illustration the opportunity afforded offord ed motorists over this new route to vis it the great natural bridges of southern utah these structures far more wonderful than any bridges ever constructed by man are really tremendous in proportion in cacti they are of such magnitude that will be visited by thousands thou ands as soon as the opportunity presents itself the topography of southern utah is probably more vivid in coloring than that of any other portion of america except perhaps the painted desert of northern arizona in utah the predominating color of the cliffs plateaus cap rocks deeply eroded canyons and the great walls of circle cliffa is a deep red subdued in tone by burnt umber and dull achre ochre nature however in her ar way has occasionally been erratic to create tremendous contrasts by grouping and maa ing color effects that are really aston so beautifully blended that the entire effect is artistic in the extreme artists who hae reached the out of the way corners of utah claim that in no other region in the united states are there so many attractions tr of fantastic cliffs abrupt and ragged buttes deeply eroded and precipitous channels all grouped and splashed with coloring po startling and unusual eliat they have really hesitated in reproducing natures handiwork for fear that their paintings would be called extras ex gant and unreal when this new road is traveled by the motoring public it will not be long before its fame as a scenic route will spread throughout the length and breadth of the land |
