Show BUILDING A CONCRETE TANK first essential Is careful selection ef of sand and gravel be careful in use of water by T n BEWALL northwest school of agriculture crookston Croo keton minn careful selection of sand and gravel Is the first necessity in the construction st of a concrete water tank for the farm sand should be clean and sharp containing not more than three or tour four per cent of clay it if it contains more clay it should be washed gravel should also be clean and not more than three fourths fourtha of an inch in eter tor for small tanks or one inch for large tanks A good mil 12 ture lure tor for tanks may be made of one part of portland cement two parts of clean coarse sand and three parts of scree screened nid gravel the cement sand and gravel grayel should be thoroughly mixed dry by turning with a shovel or hoe boo water should then be added a little at a time un til tit the mixture la Is mushy but not sloppy it if too much water la is used and the forms are not tight a part of the cement will leak out with the water and the concrete will be weak ened in making a large tank or one that la Is going to be moved from place to place a re enforcing of iron rods or wire mesh is required though old wagon tires or pieces ot of strap iron are often used it ie Is important that th t the wall re enforcing be made contin bous around the corners the tank if a largo one should rest on its own foundation and have a concrete floor surrounding it this floor will keep the tank more sanitary and also keep the water spilled by the cattle from undermining the tank the tank may be cat cast upside down by using a wooden cote core and an out side form the outside form Is made straight up and down while the inside core is made wider qt the top than the bottom then it the water should freeze in the tank the ice will slide up the sloping sides and be less likely to crack them |
